    thanks oliveoyl

A big thanks to Michael Ratcliffe (engineering colleague) for all the help and support.

If you guys are thinking of doing a conversion yourselves one day, I advise to get a few mates in on it. Definitely becomes more of a reality when 2 (or more) minds work together.

So after a few trial runs in the backstreets; kneading out all the small glitches, and having old men point their fingers at you while you tsu tsu past their house, Douglas had his maiden voyage to uni today. It was a proud moment indeed.

The speedo is out by what appears to be exactly 10k's, which is slightly annoying as it means I need smaller wheels. This may turn out to be a good thing in the end though.

We had a bit of trouble in the backstreets with surging, i forgot to mention. Every time it came on boost, it would splutter and cough so we ripped up the boot carpets and took out the in-tank fuel pump. Very impressed with lolvo, how back in 1983, they equipped this car with 2 electric pumps AND 2 fuel tanks. The auxillary tank is what they call the second one which holds roughly 20L, overdoing the lolvo's capacity to hold a tad over 80L i believe. Crazy stuff. Anyway, we found the pre pump had shat its dacks so i went shopping around for another to replace it. Was considering going for a surge tank setup but thought this would mean more work and besides I had a work colleague who had just had his jzx100 torched so I asked if he still had the pump, and he did!

Turned out to be an arse ripper of a job trying to feed the new (larger) chaser pump along with the volvo tank float assembly through the hole into the tank, from INSIDE the boot. Took the better half of a hole day. Came very close to having a heated 1-on-1 with the pump and its associates.
Decided the auxillary tank was a waste of space, so we ditched that and blocked all the holes. The boot would fit about 6 dead ppl now.

Another recent mod we did was to the keyless entry I installed about a year ago. Wwhat we did this time was shove 2 relays in to make the lights flash -_- so its a genuine luxury sleeper.

Below are a list of unusual attributes that Doug has:

    KYB gas struts
    Heavier duty springs
    IPD 25mm sway bars, f & r
    1jz TT
    R154 man trans
    Custom tailshaft
    ROH 16" rims running 225/50/16 atrezza? & maxxis, f & r
    LED interior lights
    fog lights
    Dixxie horn
    Central locking
    Keyless entry
    Leather seat covers
    JVC head unit
    12" pioneer 1000W sub
    Kenwood monoblock D 1100W amp
    Electric windows
    Electric mirrors
    180 degree rearview mirror
    3" stainless zorst
    400x400 stock intercooler

LSD to come and air con

The modded fuel pre pump I mentioned in the above post with the larger jzx100 pump installed.

    maiden voyage to uni

The next major things to tackle are aircon and LSD to rip some skids in comfort

for LSD, you can buy a Detroit Trutrac from the states.

That is the correct centre, and is what i've bought for my Volvo 240 diff thats installed in my KE70.
The aussie dorra is making them cheap as chips to buy!!

Awesome. thanks Witzl! Before i go ahead with it, I think ill explore my options first since i'm not sure if mine is an open wheeler or a completely munted lsd. I seem to remember reading on dave bartons wikis that a common problem the lolvo lsd's had was snapping some pins inside. So i wonder, if mines just done that then whether it'd be ok just to replace these rather than the whole centre. (ive never opened up a diff before so this will be a new lesson)

here are the beautiful blue ipd's i put in a few months back (just before i went and skidded the brick into the curb and messed up the front left suspension)

Howzit all, ive been having a few dramas lately with power steering. My driveway is all polkadot with atf fluid. Was just wondering what you guys thought on ps fluids.
From what i've seen, 1j power steering pump would use a dexron 3 or so, possibly even the generic ps fluid found on the shelf? Whereas the volvo rack called for a type F fluid. Just wondering what I should be running that would work for both?

The problem i've been having, it may/may not be related, but anyway, is a massive leak where the hoses bolt into the rack. Now, I've used copper washers and the same bolt and eye piece thing etc as before but it still wont stop leaking! I have muscled the bolt on, and I can feel that the 1 won't take anymore before it starts stripping and making a mess again. Like a gumtree.
So what do I do? threadlock you say? but its not leaking through the thread, its more or less through the washers. hmmm.

My 740 Turbo calls for Dexron in the power steering, Type F sounds odd. Lucas Power Steering treatment works great on small, annoying steering leaks.

hmm interesting, thanks Typhoon. You must have a later model no? I think i've learnt a thing or two about atf's now. Dexron is pretty much the replacement for type F. F was made for older model cars, generally fords of the 70's, and the only significant difference in them to dexron is the additives they have these days.
Newer fluids tend to have friction modifiers and a few other chemicals which can have deterioration effects on rubber seals and so on. Hence, why they specify the different types for certain cars.

So running an older fluid in a newer car/engine would be more devastating than running new fluid in an old car in my opinion. They both are made for lubrication purposes but the former lacks the crucial additives.

For powersteering systems, the type of atf isn't quite as important as it would be in your tranny, so pretty much any fluid would work without messing things up.

I am no expert (yet) so if you are more knowledgeable on this topic, I am open to learn what you have to teach.

What i've done with doug atm is bought new copper washers and used a sealant to hopefully keep it from dripping. I think my problem was 1.) one of the bolts is too narrow, 2.) they were both bottoming out, 3.) I was using old washers.
So i've resolved the problems and sealed them in place (because i stripped the thread) So fingers crossed this works

All ATF's have seal conditioners etc in them, I've never heard of a trans fluid swap causing leakags. Type F trans fluid is a lot lower vicsosity than the Dexrons, it was developed by Ford because they were having issues with their new line of transmissions some time in the past when they developed them.
My 740 is a 90 model, so yeah, it's the last of the line, but the power steering pump and rack is identical to yours.
Mind you, I still use the venerable 2.3 turbo, it's a fantastic engine and has plenty of torque if tuned correctly. Myth busted, you can't tow with a 4 cylinder:

Do u want to buy a b23et? haha. Or perhaps know of someone who wants?

Thanks for the help typhoon, the last attempt with 'sealant' did buggerall, and after dropping the whole rack i now see why. So anyway, i'm going to need to re-tap the hole in the rack to the toyota size, so I need an M16 1.5 tap if anybody has?
Might have to go to a tooling shop :s

nice pic btw typhoon, wat boost u running that thing at?

Thanks for the offer of a B23ET, perhaps try over on Turbobricks.
I'm running 14psi on the stock turbo, gives me great, strong midrange power. I was running 16psi, but it was hard on the auto, so I backed it off a little. Was also running on E85 for over a year, but have converted back to sell the car.

    sounds sweet man.

    Update on my brick:
Learnt the hard way never to cut corners, although I didn't realise I was doing it at the time. So...went to all the tooling shops in SA and no-one had the right tap, i mean, no-one. SA tooling or somethingrather had the intermediate tap for $22 which just wasn't going to cut the mustard so went with the ebay special. That is, an intermediate and finishing tap for $12 incl postage! wooo. Everything was just going wrong, it was one problem after the next, couldn't find the right tap, couldn't find a 14mm drill bit that wasn't $52 from the hardware store, couldn't find a drill to take the 14mm drill bit that wasn't $52 from the hardware store and so on...
I was fortunate enough to use the uni equipment which was fantastic and now, a bloomin 6 frigin weeks later it = no more leak and everything done pro-town!
Was also adviced by someone wise to use plumbers sealant just to mother those washers together and never see another leak under there again.

So, just looking at exhaust and wheel alignment for the moment

Soo much fun driving this thing. Love opening the wastegate on unsuspecting pedestrians and watching their confused faces.
Just gota pick the right time and place i guess (cops).

Well the 2" botch job of an exhaust has now gone and been replaced with a stainless 3" from dump back. Running 3 mufflers so its extra quiet (except on wot lol) costing a grand sum of $350. Not bad uh?! Sourced it all personally then got a mate at midas to weld it up.

here are some pics for ur pleasure

After the install it felt as though it lost power. It was very interesting because I used to feel an epic kick at around 2000rpm due to the back pressure i guess but now its totally gone. Its sorta lingering around 4500rpm but up top i can defs feel there is sooo much more potential.
Im hesitant at this stage to flex it properly as i don't want him sitting in the garage for a number of weeks waiting for a new diff or what have you. So, currently looking at some shiny diff centers from the US in order to lay down some rubber on both sides.
My mate at Midas also fixed up my alignment but told me that i've gone and bent the rack when i kissed the curb a while back. [sigh] this means i got to go through all that nonsense of ripping the rack out, drilling, tapping, sealing....and so on. (still pulls left you see)

    Thanks Ron
