Default rack and pinion steering - new pinion? from where?

just wondering if anyone knows if and where you can get new pinion gears cut to decrease turns lock to lock ??

alternatively - does anyone know of steering rack interchangability between toyota models? different tooth pitch?

    cheers

just a new pinion (more teeth) would require repositioning of the pinion axis also? or a thinning of the rack itself?

quaife do quick sets for the E7/E8 rolla rack and many others....

there are also rack builders for speedway etc, they might be able to help you with a set to suit?

What about the steering arm length? Easier perhaps?

    See wasn't a silly idea.

Just make sure the whatever sort of rack or gear set you get that its the right one as in where it sits ie behind the crossmember or in front of it .
unless of course you want to turn the wheel left to go right , ha ha

hahaha i went over to consult on a big dollar race car and they had used a factory rear sitting rack and put in a front sitting position! hahaha as they had not connected the wheel and shaft up they where non the wiser till i asked what it was out of! hahahah pissed myself and said are you trying to make it better for pendulem cornering. go to go right car goes left, correct and out she comes! gave me a laugh for a day or two! poor engineer was a bit red faced!

exactly what they did! there was no other way with that rack to do it otherwise! nothing worse than doing something perfect then to have to redo it. lol i mean mounting and positioning

Speedway cars sometimes use quickeners for the steering, but ratio may cut your turns too much. Normally around 1.5 or 2 to 1.

they use short racks or reductiong boxes. one is manual{ the rack } and the other you wouldnt get close to being engineered on a road reg car.
beside either would cost the same as the quaife quick gears.
lol dont even need to look at the link as i have sold and used both for years.

for our FSAE car we had an aluminium rack and pinion made up by a local tooling company. I don't know what its life will be like, being ally, but it has been going for a year and it doesnt look too worn out, and it is very light.
It might not be the most siutable thing for a road car (reliability and all) but the point is that there might be a local company that can do gearing for you, someone who is not normally involved with auto stuff.

There is also PPG in Adelaide who do custom gears
