    Default 350rwkw 1j is200 gearbox choice r154 question

Never been one to ask people's advice on forums but I am.
    I have a Lexus is200 I am currently putting a 1j in.
I purchased a z34 6speed (out of 370z) with 44ks on it. And have a Collins adaptor plate to match.
I would prefer to run this box over r154 from what I've read.
Problem is I will have to mod tunnel a fair bit to fit wich I would prefer not to do. Also have a Thor gearbox mount to suit r154.
Not to mention cannot even find an r154 for under 2k

My question is are r154s a strong box? Read they are similar to rb25 boxes and I have killed 2 of them with less power in an r32.

    Any info would be great

I skipped the R154 and went straight to a TKO600.....$3k for new bullet proof box compared to $2k used box of questionable durability at those power levels. Looks like an extra grand well invested to me?

Tremec aftermarket box. The same guys do the OEM boxes for the bigger power holden, ford, viper, corvette etc.

I haven't broken mine behind the TTUZ and that's with plenty of trackwork. The 600 bit represents the constant torque load they can handle at 600ft/lbs...that's nearly twice what the Supra 6 speed getrag is rated at! Clutches are pretty easy as the input shaft is the common as much chev 26 spline.

CRS or Dellow will make a BH to suit your 1J

Wondering if the tremec would be any smaller than the z34 box I have already sourced?

TR6060/TKO600/T56 with an adapter for a JZ is bigger again compared to a Z34 box, she no fit!

That's a T56 with a A340 bellhousing and adapter, not good if the box is already a snug fit in the tunnel.
All of the top section hits in a X83 and I'm pretty sure its the same in a IS200

    CD009 will not fit a IS300 chassis.

You can forget putting a cd009 in a is300. Starting with the firewall. The opening is too small for the bell housing. The entire tunnel is conformed tightly around the w55 and the w55 is a hell of alot smaller than a cd009. For it to fit you will need to cut the entire tunnel out starting at the firewall and going the full length of the cd009. The cd009 wont even get close enough to make the stab let alone lift up into position. Its missing 3"+ the entire length of the firewall. Even if you moved the 2jz forward a couple inches you will still not make the cut near the shifter opening. A hammer just wont be enough as the entire tunnel is way to small. This can be done by cutting out your current tunnel in its entirety and welding in a new tunnel to the floor (drift car / race car). 6k for a v160 is out of the question so im dumping this project for a better chassis.*W55 barely fits, cd009 no chance.

Is there much of a difference between a IS300 and a IS200 I'm going to say no but I've never looked at either car

Edit: CD009 is the 6 speed from 350/370z

That is z33 next to standard. Standard Box is tight. Plus add the adaptor plate.
I was wondering how big tr6060 box was.

R154 is the only box you can realistically fit with a hammer

Yep read that after I got box and bell. Is300 (American manuel version) is w58 and ours is200 is j160 both similar size

I thought I had a pic of the TKO next the R154 but can't find it. From memory the Tremec was narrower but taller. Not much in it either way. TKO is smaller than the 6 speed TR6060. The tunnel I made was for the r154 and the Tremec fitted no dramas.

Would the LS have been able to sit further forward than a 1/2JZ?

Been helping a friend put a LS3 into his IS200. The LS3 has a late model T56 (TR6060) with the remote shifter.

It fits with a small amount of mashing on the top of the tunnel. This was due to the remote shifter linkage.

    IMG_20141213_134611.jpg

Early T56s that were in VZs etc have a white plastic cover with the shifter. These don't have this hump so should fit without modification (other than where the shifter comes through).

Ideally with a JZ engine, the shifter should be 29.25" from the bellhousing from memory.

Not sure why dnegative is saying they just don't fit because they do.

Here is crappy photo of the underside, doesn't show the whole length but give you an idea.

He used a custom flange to CV adaptor, was spun up on a lathe by another friend. This mates to a Falcon tailshaft CV which is connected to the shortened IS200 tail shaft.
Funny thing was straight after this was done, Drive Shaft shop started to sell this adaptor.

The shifter is a MGW Camaro shifter that had the shaft and legs cut down.

The gearbox mount is a off the shelf item from here (full LS mount kit)

Although we were not 100% happy with this kit, certainly for the money as the fit wasn't 100% (see the longated bolt holes)
