seeing as it hasn't gotten hot enough to damage the ally parts significantly, i doubt it'll have affected the block in the slightest.
Hey guys,
I need a Toyota 1998+ 5S-FE engine block for my new GT4 engine.
Ive got two choices (no warranty offered on either):
1 - $700 for a complete bottom end which is in good condition.
2 - $350 for a complete bottom end which has been in a minor engine bay fire (melted plastics, but nothing else).
Which ever block i buy will be getting tanked, bored, honed, etc for forged goodies.
Will i be taking a risk buying the burnt engine block?
Could the heat from the fire have damaged/weakened the block?
The burnt block:

unless the fire got to the oil in the sump or melted the head, I'd say it's fine as a donor.
Yeah, thats what im thinking too.
Front engine covers are all melted, timing belt is half melted.
I didnt look down the back of the block.
The sump looks perfect. Head just looks a little scortched, no sign of melting.

Lot of widebody Camrys have engine fires as a result of throwing a leg out of bed and spraying hot oil over the exhaust manifold.. (IE broken con rod through side of block) This can sometimes be not immediately apparent, so check carefully prior to purchase.... you said the engine was out of a 20 series (98 model) .. I havnt seen them throw a leg like the widebodies do.
Apart from that, I wouldnt have a problem using a bottom end that had been burnt like the engine pictured..
Yeah, thanks.
Ill be giving it a very close look over before handing over the $$s for it.
Might even pull the sump & caps to check the crank.

If it was me I'd just go the good condition one, better safe than sorry in my opinion
its illegal to sell an engine that has been described as working with no warranty...
Where did you hear that?
A dealer can sell a whole car with no warranty (if the vehicle has more than 160ks or 10years). so why not an engine..
Actually, i thought it was illegal to sell anything at all without a 30 day warranty.

Seems that is almost correct:
