Default F series LSD into standard F series

    Hey fellas,

Yesterday I bought a Standard LSD from a MA61 Supra... From what I understand they are F series, fair enough you say, well I want to put it into my standard F series diff in my MX23...

The thing thats got me wondering is... With the MA61 being IRS and mine being a standard diff, will the LSD be interchangeable??? Or am I up for a big cash pay out before the LSD can call my diff housing home???

    Any help will be appreciated...

The LSD will definitely fit, F series is F series. Bearings might need changing, but you'd use new bearings anyway wouldnt you?

Yes I would be changing the bearings over, just to the MX23 bearings right???

Heres an even newbier question... How do you swap a centre over?? will the whole diff need to come out? I take it the driveshafts have to at least cmoe out enough to let the centre itself out, im pretty mechanically minded but i've never dabled in the world of diffs before...

The diff can stay in the car but the axles need to come out so you can get your old centre out and the new one in.Are you using the ratio from the LSD or the one thats already in your car? Removing Crown and ring gear from centre isnt that much fun..... Getting the mesh between pinion and crown right is also important if you want to avoid lash

if he's got the gears, they'll be the same ratio. if they're not shagged then there's no point changing the crown gear over. just mark where the big bearing tightening cap things as to which side they came from and to what point they were done up. once you've done that, take off the locking tabs and back the screw/caps off a turn or two then take the bearing caps(the four big bolts) off and swap. re-assemble and your away.

oh... get the diff reco'd bfore, otherwise you'll have to take it all out again if it's not right.

What? Maybe I misread, but the crown and pinion he currently has in his fixed diff could be a completely different ratio to the ones in the LSD. I was asking which ratio he wants to use if infact they arent the same

Note that fooling around with diff internals is not a job for the uninitiated. You'd best take it to a diff shop so they can set it up properly.

if he does it up exactly how it was and it turns fine with no large amount of backlash he should be alright. ya gotta learn somehow. besides, if he chews them he's got spares.

i didn't see the conversation abou ratios, but mx23's are 3.91:1 and ma61's are the same aren't they?

edit: he's not gonna need to take the pinion out, so he's not fiddlin with much. as long as he gets it back how it was he won't have a problem. What's the torque for the bearing caps? i might have it in one of my books, i'll have a look....

I dont want to rebuild it or anything at the moment, I know its in good condition allready I just want to shove it in, for the time being i'll use the 3.909 ratio from the MX23 since I do a lot of highway driving and it would be better than the 4.11...

I just wanted to make sure it will fit...

MA61 manuals are the same, autos are, you guessed it, 4.1. So, obviously his LSD is from an auto. Getting the ring gear off isnt easy, I would take it to a shop if it was me, youre going to have to put your corona crown on the LSD

be careful - take both diffs to the diff shop. I nearly got caught out trying to use an rt142 case with an ma61 centre - they were different internal heights! Although this was IRS, similar rules apply to solid rear ends...Id be using the supra lsd and the corona crownwheel...

Hmm, its actually from a MA61 that had a manual 6MGE, so im not sure what it would actually have... but if its a biggish job to change over the crown wheel etc for a different ratio, I wont bother...

So the MA61 had an engine convo? diff could be anything then if they changed the box as well. If you have access to the MA61, check the build plate, it'll at least tell you what diff the car rolled out of the factory with. Or, you could count the teeth on the pinion and crown
