i didn't see the conversation abou ratios, but mx23's are 3.91:1 and ma61's are the same aren't they?

edit: he's not gonna need to take the pinion out, so he's not fiddlin with much. as long as he gets it back how it was he won't have a problem. What's the torque for the bearing caps? i might have it in one of my books, i'll have a look....
    Joecoolmk2,

I strongly suggest that you and the Tech section are a bad idea ! If you have no idea, shut the fuck up !!! The dribble you have written above (And below) is about as wrong as it gets.

F series IS F series BUT all that means is that the crown wheel s 7.5". Thats where the similarities can end. Toyota are being big on interchangeability (Its cheaper ) generally this works great for us modifiers and stuff does just go together. This is however not always the case, especially when fitting IRS rear end bits into a live axle rear ends.

Firstly a crown wheel and pinion are a matched set. NEVER mix then up regadless of if they are the same ratio or not.

A pinion gear is not a straight forward thing to fit, ideally they are torqued to the prescribed setting or the pinion bearings and crush washers can be stuffed on installation.

I personally use an MA61 LSD in my MS112 crown diff, to get the LSD to fit required a combination of bearings to correctlyalling everything and fit it in the housing properly. From memory it cost me $450.

You have the LSD so why not use it, just do it properly and have a reputable diff specialist do it for you. An axel or diff centre swap is easy and a great idea to do yourself but a mix and match of bits inside a diff centre is best left to the experts, sure you could probably get it together and even have it work, but how well and for how long ?

Oh and as for backlash not being important.... Backlash is basically the amount of movement between the meshing of the crown wheel and pinion gear. Its actually not that hard to set IF you know how. Its not just the clearanes but the contact angles and location on the teeth (again leave it to the experts is the best option ). To illistrate why its important think of it this way. If your in your car parked 1" from the car in front of you and you floor it there is an impact, If your 1M away and you floor it there is more damage and if your 10M away and then floor it there is more damage again. The bigger the backlash the harder the impact on the teeth and the sooner your diff is F#cked !

I can confrm the pinion bearings are different between some live & IRS F series diffs I have dismantled. . I have found some factory LSD also have different side bearings and I've had to machine the LSD centre to fit it to a live axle case. Anyone who needs to be asking questions about the innards of these diffs probabaly should not be fiddling. Setting up diffs is not a back-yard job. We do them regualrly at work and it can take many hours even with good equipment.

Sorry to drag up a thread thats run its course.. But I wanted to see if anyone knows if the IRS ring & pinion gearset can fit into a live axle housing?

I need a new ring & pinion for my live axle MX23 diff, I can buy a F series 7.5" ring & pinion new from the states but the catalog says 4runner IFS, supra IRS. It also says 2wd rear truck. So i'm thinking it should work?

    THanks

Yes, it should. More often than not, the issue people have is with the carriers fitting... not R&Ps... if it is a 7.5" F-code R&P, it will fit a F-code rear, IRS or otherwise.

I.e, the 4-pinion carrier out of a 87 Supra will not fit the 2-pinion housing of an 84 truck, even though both are 8" (G-code), it will however, fit the G-code 4-pinion housing of an 87-94 V6 or 22RTE truck...

That stated, I know of one R&P that will give fits, the G-code 4.88s...

Thanks for that.. I'd like to confirm it for sure, but seems that might be a bit of a challenge. Might be one of those suck it and see things..
