Default rebuilding a ball bearing turbo

    Heyo,
My garrett GT3582R is in need of a new exhaust wheel. Most places I have googled have told me that I need to replace the entire core and you cant just replace the shaft/turbine. But I have also found somewhere in Japan that sells replacement shaft/Turbines. I currently have it stripped down to the core but, unlike a bush bearing turbo, the shaft is in there tight. Can I just press the shaft out? is there a locking pin etc. somewhere obscure that needs to be removed? Or do I just have to bin the whole core? If the latter, what a poo design!
Thankyou in advance for any advice,

    Regards,
    Mike Beatle

    Hi Mike,
Here in Australia we are very short on options for getting Garrett turbo's rebuilt at all except overpriced complete core...
Over christmas I had both of my GT3582r's recored in the US. I was quoted around $1500 each here in aus. I had both done at a Garrett US dealer including post for $1200 or so. Garrett in the US has a BB service program where if you have a rebuildable core they exchange it for $500. I sent both cores over and within 2 weeks had 2 new ones on my doorstep.

With the dollar being quite good right now it may be worth considering this option.

    Cheers,
    Jason

Yeah I was looking at that CHRA exchage programme, such a shame we dont run it here!
Just ordered the turbine shaft @$175. will press out the old one and see how I go. There is some shaft play, but its fairly minimal.
If that doesnt work, will definitely go the US exchange option. who did you use?

I think it was APT turbo from memory.
It was a little while ago however I can't remember my shafts being tight to remove from the core... Maybe mine were just plenty worn!

you can get garretT's rebiult over here. i was quoted $900 for a new bearing pack, seals and turbine, assembelled and balanced. if the shaft/turbine isn't damaged then it'd only be $600.

how are you goin to rebalance it?

i'm guessing you got the gt35turbine's off that dude on ebay, they aren't genuine garrett turbines

So jonathan yee, who rebuilds the garretts over here for that sort of money?
Late last year I contacted all the usual aussie suspects i.e. GCG, MTQ, Ray Hall, John Patrick etc and they all said garrett components were not cheap to buy individually anymore and the cheapest option was the complete core which was $1500 cheapest and $1800 dearest quote...

Drop a name or two cos I would much rather have supported an aussie firm if they had been competitive!

forgot to do re-assembly photo's. but the core is all back together
will throw it on and run it up, if its noisy, will send it off to get VRS balanced.

Did that end up working fine after you put it all back together, would you recommend someone trying it themselves? I've got a GT2560R that feels a bit tight.

there was a few things I did wrong. mainly cause I was just shooting from the hip. As you can see from the photo, the bearing pack came apart. I cold pressed (using my hands) it back together, and I think this took the precision out of the bearing. also the cheap turbines seal is now leaking. I never got it balanced either.
If you were to do it yourself, try and keep the bearing together and get it balanced properly afterwards. if you can buy a new turbine and bearing pre-assembled, do that, it may work out alot cheaper. would propably pay to get it sent out to get VRS balanced once you've put it back together.

pulling it apart and putting it back together is fairly straight forward. just the bearing and turbine assembling/ disasemblig is the tricky part. With practice I could probably get it down pat, but would take a fair bit of trial and error. and the right tools
