    Default Identifying this gearbox?

I am trying to identify this gearbox that I purchased recently.

From what I can remember it looks like a S53 gearbox

I originally thought it was from a st162 celica

it is a st162 box. Easily identified by the exhaust side starter mounting

Thanks for sending that through mate.

Just out of couriousity could it be from a ST version (3sfe).

A friend mentioned it looked different to his st162 sx 3sge gearbox.

What else do you want to know about it?
It's an S53 from a celica st162 with no LSD that has been nicely sprayed and shiny but means fk all.

and yeah you might be able to use it for your missus' mr2 if you want but you'll need to a heap of work to change the shifter linkages to go through the other side. look for a thread from buck_naked when he did mr2-fwd but you'll be doing the reverse. can't confirm if its possible but i wouldnt even bother

Was just trying to make sure it was a S53 gearbox, for some reason the position of the starter motor is different to my old st162 sx.

Thanks for the heads up otherwise mate

plenty of gearboxes in st162's have been swapped with box's from other variants as they're easier to source, but from the factory the 3sge st162 had the stater on the engine side.

mine has an st184 box so starter's on gearbox side and i have nice long ratio's, which suit's me as it's done over 300thou K's and i don't wanna rev the crap out of it, so it sit's nicely just over 2000rpm doin 80kph to work and back.

    Hi Mate,

Thought I would throw my 5 cents in as I have been doing a 3SGE conversion (for fun) on a SV21 Camry (3sfe block/box) using the standard box.

That box defintly is not a 3sfe as they have the starter on the gearbox side with the starter having a long neck streching out to the flywheel.

Having looked at a few MR2's (e153's i think if i remeber properly) and a couple of 185's, and a turbo 162, my guess is that is defintly a celica 3sge gear box.

    Hope that helps
