Default 4AGZE in to 4AGE AE82. (now with CV shaft info)

    Hey guys,

I've got an AE82 ('86 Corolla Seca twin cam), which I've recently picked up, and it has a seized motor.

So, in need of a new motor, I've decided that I don't want to experience a 4AGE, but instead go straight for some boost.

I haven't yet bough the 4AGZE, but am looking around as much as I can.

After a search of the forums I've found no issues reported. so I thought I'd be a little more direct and ask people here if they know of any issues that I should be aware of.

    Specifically:
Will the 4AGE gearbox handle the 4AGZE torque and power?
What model gearbox should I be looking at, if I were to replace the stock box (and what model is the stock gearbox)?
Assuming I get a 4AGZE ECU also, are there any wiring issues that I should be aware of?

hi striker, ive got a 4agze s'charged in an ae82 twinky hatch but i bought it with the conversion already done but in relation to your question about the gearbox i would suggest that you look for a 4agze motor and gearbox as apposed to mixing and matching unless your going to seriously modify the motor

check this out. it will tell you bout the various different gearbox codees available and what each one has in it. If you could get your hands on an LSD box then you would be set. that would handle the all the abuse would throw at it....

Yeah, that's what i'm thinking at the moment. I'm looking mainly at frontcuts or complete packages.

Most places around here want $2400 for a cut with a MAP sensor.

Where abouts in NSW are you, and if you're in Sydney, would it be at all possible to come have a look at yours at some stage?

the GZE into an AE82 raises a small dilema for the "bolt in" converter - in that the rear gearbox mount doesnt line up to the AE82 crossmember.

    I've seen two solutions:

    1. Weld up a plate to the AE82 crossmember for the rear gearbox mount to bolt to

    2. space down the front of the crossmember and jimmy things around a little bit. I've seen this done and it works, but i dont know how dodgy/good it is.

The rear of my crossmember has been spaced down about 1.5". It's still not ideal, but I'm nost sure whether it's worth the effort of fixing properly.

    Karl,
Could I possibly interest you in doing this modification to fit the 4AGZE?
I have no idea how to weld, or what exactly to do.

um what you do is grab 2x longer bolts for the rear of the crossmember.
Then you grab 2x random rubber rings ~2" high that were laying around, then you put the rubber rings of unknown origin between the crossmember and body.
    Then you tighten the bolts.

Voila! you've got a lowered crossmember!

*cries* And then you power the thing with a dirty big elastic band?

Hang on, I'll just grab a skyhook to sort your engine problems with...

On a serious note, get someone with a welder (there are mobile welders...) to re-weld it where it needs to be. Much safer, better...etc

Could you do me a huge favour, and tell me if your crossmember is bolted directly on to the chassis, or if it looks like it's been lowered or spaced down?

The 4AGE has now been removed, and we're starting to look at fitting the 4AGZE.

I have heard it suggested that I need to use the CV shafts from an AE101 (because that is where this 4AGZE and gearbox are from).

I thought an AE101 was considerably wider than an AE82 (in to which I'm fitting this stuff).

Could anyone give me any ideas/suggestions on driveshafts?

I'm pretty sure i've seen ae82s run the ae101 driveshafts before,
Even struts fit with little work..

U'd probably have to use the ae101 driveshafts, for 1 they would last a lot longer (being bigger and stronger) and also dunno if the standard ones would fit.

We tried to test-fit the old ones today. My friend likened it to sticking your penis in to a bucket.

Do the AE101 CV shafts need modifying at all? A number of people have told me that the AE101 is wider than the AE82.

Driveshafts do not need modifying at all, so long as you have the correct shafts that suit the gearbox.

I'm actually heading out to see a bloke this arvo who has an E58 box that is LSD, and he has the driveshafts that match... in an AE82 even!...... I'll see how much he wants for the lot

Did you end up working out if you have an LSD gearbox or not?
(for ref. LSD = limited slip differential)

Here's some pics to look at.....

C52 driveshaft vs E58 LSD driveshaft (both drivers side)

E58 LSD driveshaft spline that goes into g/box (pass. side)

E58 lsd driveshaft spline going into g/box (d/side)
