Default JZ hydraulic vs clutch fan

So the question is....... when doing a conversion in a JZA70 Supra, is it better to retain the original hydraulic cooling fan setup (transferring across the water pump and associated accessories to the new motor), or just using the clutch fan on the donor VVTi 1JZ/2JXZ being installed?

What are the advantages/disadvantages of each?

I can see that the hydro fan has its own electronic control unit, is this separate from the engine & ECU looms?

    Thanks in advance.

The hydro fan will shit on the clutch fan in terms of performance, but its obviously a lot harder to install into another car, and adds a fair bit of complexity as well as more points of failure.

I'm not sure if the electrical system is completely seperate, but I doubt it.
There is a solenoid on the pump which will be part of the engine loom, and a sensor on the radiator which will be part of the body loom.
The other things it looks at are the AC on input, AC pressure switch, and IDL contact on the TPS.

If the car is going to be used as a daily and have working aircon, and the aircon used a lot in traffic/etc, I'd personally put the effort in and reuse the hydro fan (order all new hoses and seals for it).

is there anything wrong with Spal thermo fans?

12" Spal fan rated at 1225cfm... & their 16" fan is a 'true' 1600cfm fan...

this in many cases double or triple davies craig fans.. and there not very expensive either..

thanks Cruzida for that comprehensive info! Sounds like a lot of trouble to integrate into the new loom... i'll have to look into it some more. Clutch fan would definitely be the easier option it seems.

matty, spal swept blade fans are fantastic, but no electric motor can provide the same level of pulling power as a mechanical unit. I've got a Spal 16" on my 1JZ in the Corolla.

Don't even compare Davies craig to anything other than a hand-crank operated by a 90yo granny That's the only thing that would make them look good

yeh i know what you mean.. i had a 12" kung-powchingla on my old school G200 (92mm bore) with 10.8 cr etc etc.. wouldn't keep it cool... switched to the stock fan (not even a clutch fan!) and she was perfect...

I used thermo's when i first did my 2jz jza70 conversion. I had major problems with it heating up in summer. In the end i got a rebuilt jzz30 clutch fan with a standard ma70 fan shroud. Never had a problem with it since.

MA70 shroud hey? That's handy to know. Did it line up ok with the clutch fan on the 2JZ?

Yer it lined up perfectly with the clutch fan. It does have a ma70 radiator aswell. That was installed when the conversion was done with the thermo's.
