oil -> water cooler

I am looking for options for a water-cooled oil cooler for a 4age (blacktop). It's in a mk1 mr2, so not much airflow, and I have heaps of surplus water cooling capacity.
I don't want to use the stock mr2 oil-water cooler, so I'm looking for alternatives.
It's not a race car, so the cooler doesn't need a lot of capacity.

Can the Camry cooler (under the oil filter) be fitted to a 4age ?
Does anyone have measurements of one ? or pictures ?
Is it any use ?

Any other suggestions ? I read good things about laminova coolers, but they're way expensive.

Have a look at a WRX oil cooler.
I recently fitted one to my racing car. You may need to weld on a new section of thread where it screws into the block like I did though.



You also need to make some small modifications to the water system but it's not that hard to do.

ive heard good things about the subaru ones & was going to use one on my track car but have since upgraded the whole oil & water system instead

I haven't run it yet, more than a run on the stand in the garage but it seemed to work quite well there. My car only runs for ten - fifteen minutes flat-out anyway so I can stand a higher oil temp for a short time even if it doesn't work as well as the Setrab oil cooler I used to use.

They're about twice the size as the Toyota ones, so they should work a fair bit better.

Toyota engines with oil->water coolers :
mk1 mr2 (aw11) : 4age
Bypass type - oil is tapped from the oil filter, flows through cooler, drains to sump.
Oil flow through cooler is controlled by a spring/piston pressure valve. I assume the pressure at the cooler bypass must be lower than the oil pump relief spring, and the cooler and oil lines are low pressure.

Camry ('94 5SFE ?)
Full-low sandwich type, with pressure bypass.

filter flange ID 2-1/2", filter flange OD 2-3/4", suits oil filter with a 3/4 in. -16 thread and 2-5/8 in. diameter O-ring.

I'll measure the 4a filter housing tonight; if anyone has links to what filter sizes fit what toyota engines, post them up.
Ideally I would like a bolt-on solution; the water plumbing should not be a problem.

celica is 2 1/2" up to '93, then 2 5/8".

First, the plumbing has to be redone anyway for the 20v, as the water fittings are both at the rear of the engine.

Second, I'd need to mod the 20v sump for the oil return line (minor work, I know).

Third, I don't like the bypass type oil cooler, as the bypass valve is now controlling the oil pressure. It must open at lower pressure than the oil pump to work at all, but I don't know what pressure. If I could see some figures of aw11 oil pressure vs blacktop, I'd be happier.

my diahatsu feroza has a sandwhich style oil/water cooler. wouldnt a barrel type cooler like the stock aw11 one have more surface area inside making it a better cooler?

adrianS.. that second picture you posted is a HILUX, with a turbo diesel motor, brand new model...

and btw, its a heat exchanger.. its not for cooling performance its for keeping the temperatures around the same temp....

if you want cooling performance, purchase independant coolers..
