Default 1JZ Autobox in MX83 Issues - Please See Bottom of Page 2

Hey guys I've just been informed by my mechanic that my 1JZ Cressida is far from healthy after a few light dyno pulls. He pulled it off after noticing a noise which he thought was either the tappets or a big end bearing . I'm going down Monday morning to discuss my options, but I just wanted some extra advice.

The car still runs, so is there any distinct noises which could isolate the problem?

Will different RPMs/Loads differentiate the noises?

I assume to diagnose either problem could be a lengthy process, so after confirming the noise should I just go straight to a rebuild? Any recommendations for a workshop to take it to in Brisbane?

The car's been off the road for a good three months now, and I'm itching to get it going (have only driven her with the 7M!). How safe would it be to baby around town for a little while (aka to train station/shops etc)?

Less cost the better as well . I'll update the thread on what's happening, and cheers for any replies

Cheapest option by far is to buy another 1jz for ~$600 and put it in.

    Way cheaper than a rebuild

First thing to do is drop the serpentine belt off and see if the noise is still there.

Yeah I just read a few threads on rebuilds etc. and I certainly don't have the cash for a rebuild with nice internals yet. It's a JZX81 motor, so am I searching for a JZX81 long motor or can any 1J fit?

Tappet/valve train noise happens at 1/2 engine speed and isn't affected by load and is consistent except for getting louder, from more clearance, when hot. Hydraulic lifters can vary with oil pressure & temp.
A bearing can make noise twice for every engine revolution when really bad, once before they get there.

    Any 1jz.

Swap sumps if needed but that's about it.

If your mechanic says its either tappets or a big end, then find another mechanic. He should know the difference.

First, I'd use the above advice to work out what the noise is exactly. Tappets vs big end is a HUGE difference, both in noise and cost.

Regardless, unless you're planning on some serious engine mods a 2nd hand engine will be a cheaper option, and you'll probably be ok to drive it around town (pending diagnosis on the above criteria)

do 1j's even have tappets? arent they just cam over shim over bucket?

if you are just going to replace with a 2nd hand motor then drive the one in there til it doesnt drive anymore, then tow it home and swap motors. if ur planning a rebuild then dont drive it to minimise further damage.

    UPDATE:

So I got the car home today, turned it on - a few small 'donk' sorta noises then business as usual. Went down the street and back with no issues, but one of the rear heater hoses is split and coolant is just pouring onto the road. It's a PITA to get to the hose as well, but even with the car off coolant is flowing freely out of it.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a replacement hose/how to reattatch it properly? Thanks

I'm fairly certain its a big end issue, but under light loads it seems to function normally - Could any of the problems been caused by overheating? Because the heater hosed would have been cracked for quite some time now.

This is the hose in question - one on the rear of the block, which attaches to the heater transfer thing-a-ma-jig:

Not necessarily on the noise issue being a bottom or top end. I've had big ends gone and is very hard to tell on my 1JZ until I had pulled it down. Twice actually.

to fix that heater hose ide reccommend vn commodore heater hoses and a joiner...

they are a long hose with a 90 degree bend on it... should get you out of trouble with 2 of those and a simple joiner...

otherwise genuine toyota will do the trick...
