    Default Testing Coil Packs

    Hello,

What is a good way to test coil packs to find out which one is bad? Most sites say to check for the spark to make sure its a strong spark, bright blue colour.

Any other ways to get a good idea of the condition of a coil. They are 1jz coils.

i have heard of a few ways, but the problem with them tends to be under load (AFAIK) which is next to impossible to simulate.

the solution when i had trouble with mine went as follows.
    1. Remove 1st group, install new one, drive.
    2. if step 1 doesnt remove miss, move to group 2 and repeat step 1.

pretty annoying but it worked in the end.

if you are trying to test some that you are not sure are working on the other hand could be slightly more difficult.

The other way to check them is to check resistance through them with a multimeter bacically if you have really high OR very little OR nothing at all then thats the one with the problem

You have to get specs from toyota or workshop manual for the motor

its the most effective way of doing it

Or you could just test all of them and if one is heaps different reading then others then you know thats the one

Testing resistance often wont show a bad coil that has shorted windings or cracked/bad insulation.

Trial & Error with replacing each one in turn like Glenn suggested is the best way.

    Thanks,

That should be the best way, I'll do that.

On another note, I see many Skylines with Silicon around the coil packs, wonder why people put it there.

I agree with MWP , if you didnt want to do the trial & error test, you maybe able to set up a test to see how far a spark will jump the faulty unit will jump a smaller gap.

Edit:Just wanted to elaborate on my original post

you can also check for breakdowns in the windings by checking the output voltage of the coil, I have not see the 1JZ coil pack but this is how I tested My VW unit so Im thing you can apply the same test here.

I had a VW with a Hi-performance coil after about 18month if failed, It took a while to find the fault as the test with a spark plug to block produced a spark, the coil was the last thing I changed of course, you need about 1000V for a spark to jump a 1mm air gap, so I opened the gap on the old spark plug until the faulty coil didn’t produce a spark it didn’t take much , I assumed this was because the spark was arcing inside the coil.

If you can under stand how a coil pack works you'd see its very hard to measure them with a muti meter.
Try to understand that when you make an electric current work it produces a magnetic field. When the current is broken, the magentic field callapses. This callapse of a magnetic field causes a massive back electro motive force (emf) causing a "spark" of power jumping back over the sparkplug, back to earth at about a 1000v.

Sometimes the windings can short out which can be pick up by a multimeter but the only way is swapping them around.

Because they are very prone to cracks forming in the insulator. We completely mummified the coilpacks on my mates R33 last year and there was a marked improvement as it used to really break up under load (although i think the problem was still there, just not nearly as bad).

    Thanks ra28miles,

Nick seems they are more common problem on Nissans than Toyotas? must be why I always see nissans spitting

Spark always takes the easiest route , testing coils on a bench is different to a boosted cylinder where pressure causes blowout or spark issues .

There are a new line of coils for the 1JZ available by Super Spark .

you just turn the motor on and pull the pull the lead off the plug and shove your finger inside
