Being an M motor its bound to do a BHG in the near future, I say disconnect the temp guage and drive, what I used to do in the old Cressida haha
Hi Folks,
I have a 1975 Toyota Crown and as far as I know its has the original radiator but its only ever done 110,000 klms, I purchased it with 90,000klms on the clock and with the 8/10 condition of the Crown I'd say the 90,000 are original.
Now my problem is I started a run over to Rockhampton from Emerald today and 100klms into the trip with the air conditioner on at 3/4's she started sitting up on the hot but not quiet on the orange so I turned around and came home.
Half an hour after returning home the needle is at the normal operating position and its now running fine, firstly yes it is a hot day probably in the high 30's but its done the same trip in the heat numberous times.
2,000klms ago I replaced the radiator hoses and thermostate and added that new modern red coolant and all was well.
I'm wondering if having the radiator recored or reconditioned might help and if so what actually happens to the radiator that needs them replacing, yes the oil and air conditioner coolers are unblocked and so is the engine radiator also if I have to replace the radiator would replacing the water pump assist in cooling the engine.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated
Owen

Get radiator recoed and a new fan viscous coupling. They are over 30 years old!
Some of the channels in the radiator will be blocked such that water won't be flowing through them therefore less efficient cooling. This is probably going to be fine when you're just pottering about town with little stress on the engine but charging along at 100 - 110 kph with air con going flat out on a 30+ degree day will probably test out whatever deficiencies exist in your cooling system.
Yeah for sure your radiator will be blocked a good clean out will do it good.
I agree with gianttomato i would change the fan coupling, because of the age of the car then its starting to get tired so id change it for sure
If the actual core of the radiator is still in good condition, you may only need the radiator "rodded" - where they pull one end tank off, pass a specially formed steel rod through every water passage to knock out the built up sediment from the tubes, flush, and then reinstall the end tank. Will cost less than $100 to have done, and follow it up with a radiator filter to catch any large items in the cooling system that may lead to more flow issues.
Thanks for the advise guys, I decided to have a radiator specialist look at it the day after it started running hot and they flushed out the system, I have done this reviously with the Nulon flush but still a hand full of matter came out, they also adjusted the belts, fitted a new water pump and repacked the clutch thingy on the fan and last night at 11.30pm I returned from a 1600 klm trip towing the camper without a single problem and the needle sits half way on the gauge even with the aircond on.
Oh what a feeling,Toyota Crown.
