    Default Exhaust - MA70

    Hey all,

my exhaust has seen alot better days, as in, its so bad, those better days wouldve been before it was even made...

    anyway, moving on.

i went to Mattams Mufflers herre in Balcatta, all of a 3 minute drive from my house, and was informed that my exhaust is pretty much useless, from the cat-back. The centre muffler is shagged, all the piping has rust holes in it, and the end muffler is also shagged, with the tip being welded in the wrong place, covering half the rear muffler hole, quote was $270, for a cat back system, consisting of a 2.5" system, with a rear muffler, and the option of adding $20-$80 depending on what shiny tip i wanted.

The other option i was given, was a 2.5" system, straight through from the cat, with a cannon on the end, for $420. Keep in mind, this is a jump of $150, not the $200 it appears to be. Now, i know the cannon will be hella loud, but im hoping it will be bearable, considering the restrictive factory dump, turbo and cat.

I dont like loud, drony exhausts, and i dont want a "nice note" i want it to be as quiet as possible while puttering around doing my daily thing.

Which sticks me with the muffled system, which, i have to say, while does the job, looks ghey. This, for me, is fine, im all about functionality, not looks. However, i do have plans to up the boost a bit later on down the track, and i dont want my brand spanking new exhaust to become a bottleneck for the motor.boost will but up for factory 5psi, to around 8-9, not a huge gain, but it is a mod

i need advice as to whether the system will a) be a restriction, b) be worth the money and c) peoples experiences with different exhausts and their loudnesseseses.

Cheers Ya'll, rep button at the ready

I have a 3.5" dump which narrows to 3" at the rear and the system creates 7psi of backpressure as measured on the dyno.

I dare say a 2.5" system will be a hell of a lot more restrictive.

Eldar, my 2.5" cat back with only a cannon on the end was $300 total
The Loundess (remember i have a 1G) is good as in , its loud enough , but not stupid WRX style.
As for the in-cabin drone, its not too bad but it is noticeable. If i had put a resonator in the mix between the cat and cannon there would be a minor difference in exterior loudness but it would stop the cabin drone.

im pushing out 12psi from the 1G poop and its all good

Carline Mufflers in Wangara did mine , great guys.

If funds allow, 3" mandrel bent is the way to go IMO. a muffler and resonator should make it sufficiently quiet and it'll save you money later on when the power bug bites you harder

eeeek, Peewee, you do realise what my car is?

Eldars MA70 is synonymous with uninspiring!

i just need a system that will allow me to have a decent flow, that wont be too loud.

Dong, id imagine more back pressure comes with more power, and since your making stupid amounts, i dont think ill be in too much trouble, especially since long term goals with this car (4-5 years) include all of 250 rwhp and manual conversion.

John, cheers for the local knowledge, i will make sure to check them out, hopefully tomorrow on my way back from mandurah, the hole of WA.

Matt, ill see the fellers tomorrow, and hopefully get a quote.

Press bent = teh evil gheyness, and wont be seen anywhere on my car, i can assure you all that!

    Cheers everyone, reppage for all!

nope, Mandurah, it jumped up in the scales, lengthening the lead today, when my tyre decided to delaminate at 100 km/h.

luckily it was only the inside edge of the tyre, and what alerted me to it was a thump-thump-thump noise, i pulled over, expecting the 7M to throw p00 at me, and found it was the tyre, somewhat releived, i cut the strip of rubber off, and proceeded to drive it back into town.

It took me an hour and a half, i kid you not, to find a tyre place.

this was limping around at 60km/h, as, amazingly, the bridgestone managed to keep its pressure during the whole time, allowing as much speed as my balls would allow, 70 km/h for a breif spurt, limping it at 40 or so everywhere else.

the guy down there, at Beaurepairs, goes by the name of Brad, and i can honestly say, ive never met a more helpful retail person, ever.

i just got them to replace the tyre with some shitty no name $120 jobbie, for 235/45/17, they're shit, but the car isnt going anywhere near a track for as long as this prick will last, loooong way to go before it goes to the track

I'd be spending money on a decent 3" exhaust. Personally, I don't think the 2.5" is going to pose a huge problem, providing you have at least a 3" dump and 3" cat. Those are the important bits.
