Question "G" code diff crown wheel & pinion advise please

    Hi.

    I have a RN85 with a injected 289 Windsor & C4. I currently have a G292 (4.10) in it. = 3800rpm to do 110kph but gets there FAST.

I have just got a 2 pinion LSD center and now I need new crown wheel & pinion. As I will mostly do street duty I thought 3.25 or 3.5 gears would be nice.

Can you help point me in the right direction on where is the best place to buy the above gear set. Also what brand is the most reliable.

I will then have it all fitted to my carier. Any advise on a good shop in or near melbourne.

    Thanks.

Not sure what you want or that you have that right?

Going form a 4.1 to a 5.1 will make it lower geared so more revs at 100k??

I presume you want less rev's for the 100k, so you will need a 3.9 -3.2?

    Lower numbers are higher geared,
    higher numbers are lower geared.

Look for Motive gears on ebay. About $450 for 3.7 ratio.

I have a set of 3.9 gears in my hilux that i bought from him and they have been fine so far.
Another piece of advise if your going to change to a 3.9 or under use your 4.1 housing.
If you use a lower geared housing it has an offset pinion and wont work.

I understand how gear ratios work.
    I am after 3.25 3.5 so I will be doing around 1000rpm less @ 110k

Finding low ratios for the 4wd is no problem.

Seems harder to find taller ratios.

I have seen the motive gears on ebay.

I still think 3.9 is too low.
    3.25 would be better behind a V8 & auto
I will use my center and housing.
I didn't know the G code housings we any different. Is it that the pinion is in a different position so the tailshaft wont line up the same.
    Thanks.

The pinion is slightly offset to allow for the bigger pinion so if you try to use a 4.8 gear housing the pinion will be too far away from the crown wheel and you will be unable to adjust the side bearing preload or backlash because the adjusters will be all the way towards one side.
If you use the 4.1 housing you should be fine, i just used the 4.8 because its the one i used the lsd centre from and i wanted to keep my car on the road build the diff and then swap the centre over in a weekend.
I ended up having to buy another 4.1 centre so it became an expensive exercise.

Maybe go for the 3.54 as it would be pretty good all round.
I take it your running a 3 speed auto?
I went 3.9 because i am running the a340e still with overdrive

have you looked at using something like an aod ? or a 95LE. the V8 falcons had a seperate tranny computer you could get to work. i like the whole low gears/overdrive better. you get to keep your acceleration and still get reasonable cruise rpms.
so much stuff. so little time.

I think I will stick with my C4 as it has a stage 3 shift kit 2500 stall and is well capable of handeling the 350 odd Hp the 289 makes. The main issue with the low gears is it spins the wheels way to easy.
I guess it would be expensive to build one of the other boxs to suit my engine. Cheaper to change the gears and have a spare centre for the drags.
