Default MX73 Diff Centre in RT142 F372 DIFF

    Hey all,

Continue from previous thread about options, I really would like a heads up on what's involved with installing this centre.

My auto RT142's diff is on it's way out, and the best offer so far is a MX73 diff centre.

    Put simply:

Will this be a centre to centre clean swap?

    OR

Will this involve me shimming, changing gears and a lot more 'internal work'?

I don't know whether this centre I'm getting is from auto or manual Cressida - but because I live 400Km from civilisation - it's my only practical choice at the moment.

    Thanks! You're a great help!

    Hey Robbos Toyotas,

I thought that my RT142 diff couldn't take an LSD? I want to put this diff centre into my F372 housing and from what I've researched I thought that they couldn't take LSDs.

Just to clarify - this is a short term solution - what the car is totally reliable I can drive the 400 or so k's back to Brisbane and search harder for a better option.

the ma61 diff is the same from what i can tell mines currently got an ma61 lsd centre in a rt142 housing.
i've got a standard auto diff complete kicking around if your interested its an open centre though and not 100%sure of the condition but may come in handy to trial fit different centres into it

why dont you just bolt the whole diff assembly in??

im 90% sure it bolts in.

saves having to rebuild the diff from scratch with new bearings etc

    Hey,

So far the only thing I can find is an mx73 centre!!! It's all about availability at the moment I fear. If I found a complete diff that's suitable - it'd be in!

Also, this is my daily and I've got to be 100% it's going to go in hassle free before I make a move.

If anyone has any good sources for these types of parts let me know!

i thought the crown wheel and pinion are fucked??

    or is it the centre?

the centre is usually only noticeable when the wheels have relative rpm, ie going around corners.

Yes - this is where I have an issue - I'm not sure whether or not the wreckers who rang me back had the entire centre assembly (pinion, wheel etc) or just the centre...I'll clarify this tomorrow and reassess what I'm doing.

And yes, to note, the whining is when getting up to top speed - corners I don't notice much difference.

I'll keep you posted. Thanks again! :-)

I'd day a wrecker would have the whole centre assembly.

There would be not point in just swapping in a centre as its probably your crown and pinion gear that are f$$ked.

You would want to swap over the whole centre off a diff crown, pinion the lot, and as Brett said I wouldn't mind betting the whole diff assembly would bolt up. Ie drop the diff out of the MX73 and bolt up to the RT. The one I have here looks pretty similar to most of the IRS diff's I've seen.

Any F series guts go into both Live and IRS set ups ,all can have an LSD there are just the odd bearing issues with certain LSD's

Just as a note MS123 is the only F series IRS that I know of that externally is different to MX, RT, RA, MA etc.

Cool - but, say in the instance that the ONLY thing I can get a hold of in a reasonable amount of time, is the diff centre assembly including pinion etc - then would this be straight swap?????

To make it clearer - I DO NOT want to be dissassembling the internal of the diff 'centre' assembly.

    SO -

Is it possible to (in the following order)

    a) Drop the Diff out of the RT142
    b) Pull out the entire centre assembly from the F372 diff
    c) Replace that assembly/housing with the MX73 complete assembly
    d) Insert diff back into car
    e) drive as normal...

Is that how it works? Enlighten me!

You want a whole and complete IRS diff, as pictured below.

MX73 will bolt into RT142 IRS
