Default Why get <brandname here> clutch?

I've just gotten to the stage of replacing the clutch on my 4AGTE AE92 prepping it for the turbo upgrade to a TD04L.

Now to keep this as short and sweet as I can, I had done lots and lots of reading and research about what kind of clutch to get and while I've tried many different types of organic clutch I've not had the experience with ceramic type clutches.

My reasoning for a new clutch was that with the last I had I had experienced some slipping when giving it the boot and with the new engine work I have done I'm aiming to make around 50 kW more power (and hence more torque).

What I basically wanted in a new clutch was the same as what I had before as I was perfectly happy with how it behaved, except that it slipped at the higher power ranges.

I have read much about many people overdoing the clutch they need and I had concerns about how useable and durable a cushioned button ceramic plate is, not to mention the much higher cost. So I chose an Exedy HD clutch kit which I got for a good price.

Now my question is what am I getting for my money with this clutch? Examining my old clutch in certain areas it looks beefier than the new clutch so I can't see why so many people/clutch shops say this is the way to go?

I've taken some pictures of what I have here and I'm keen to hear what people really have to say oh what sort of clutch is the go.

Here's what you see in the pictures:
    - Toyota 4AGE factory pressure plate (unknown kms possibly over 100k)
    - LuK "Heavy Duty" aftermarket replacement pressure plate and clutch disc (kit cost $135 with NSK throwout bearing, approx 20k kms)
    - Exedy HD "Sports Tuff" pressure plate and clutch disc (kit valued at approx $350 with NSK throwout bearing, brand new, unused)

LuK clutch disc vs. Exedy HD

Toyota Genuine 4AGE PP, LuK PP, Exedy HD PP

    Of particular interest:

    Genuine

    LuK

    Exedy

So where does the extra "heavy duty" come from? If the clutch plate better quality? What's recommended for this situation? What are we paying for when we get these aftermarket clutches? Discuss...

with my clutch upgrade i compared my old exceedy clutch to my new clutch built by npc
i noticed that the npc cluch plate was still a exceedy but had been modified it now had dual springs and the clutch material was changed and re riveted

don't buy an exedy clutch if you like a good long soft clutch pedal.
they're ok for the circuit or drags but..until the plate springs fall out

I've had a couple of excedy ones...Can't say i was very happy with the one I got for my MR2 (GZE, E51). It never slipped (but was only making 150-180RWHP), but it didn't feel...right. The take up was spongy and inconsistent, and the pedal felt...soft? Not light, but it didn't have good feel.

Its predominantly the extra clamping force that makes it a HD over standard. When i installed a Excedy HD clutch in my car (different application) the pedal actually became lighter and more vague but i believe this is to do with the fulcrum in the pressure being moved.

NPC advised they can get more clamp force when rebuilding an OEM ASIN pressure plate compared to the Exedy pressure plates. I've also had many exedy clutch discs break the springs out in FWD corolla setups.

Yeah I've seen the clutch plate throw a spring on several forum members before too, this was my main concern, all this money might be better directed into getting what I have modified to suit the added torque. I really wish I could use the LuK pressure plate because it had a very good pedal feel and absolutely no shudder.

I have just had a spring break out on my excedy hd clutch on the lancer only making 166whp.

The HD clutches have more clamping force with generally the same materials, just bigger springs / preload.

I've got an extreme here to install, pressure plate looks good but I expect the clutch plate to pop a spring out more easily than the exedy plates do due to the retainer design.
    eg:

The prices are pretty close, just depends on where you source the clutch from as there can be up to $200 difference on the same kit between suppliers.

I've got pics of a heap of broken exedy plates and also my old pbr plate too (similar to the xtreme center, but not drilled at the edges of the retainer punchings to stress relieve them.)

My mate picked up a extreme HD kit for his RB25 the other day for a good $150 less then the exedy unit he priced, that's what made me ponder.....extreme are starting to get a good name for themselves so I may have to try them.
