Default celsior/ LS400 speedo issue.. URGENT

    hey, i need help urgently..

i need to know what can cause the speedo to stop working?

because the speedo is not working, its fucking with my automatic computer...

i need to know urgently what can cause the speedo to stop working...

also, the P R N D 2 1 lights on the dash have stopped working...

this has all happened today... i have been fucking around with the steering column today to get the tilt adjust fixed....

someone please give me some options..

i was thinking speedo cable for the speedo not working (obvious) but why would that cause the PRND21 lights to stop working.... i also had the dash out today to fix the tacho.. which now works...

Perhaps you've left something unplugged and you've disconnected the +12V that goes to the auto position selector... hence loosing that on the dash.

And I think that +12V is also shared with the speed sender?

I'm not 100%, (haven't looked at the diagrams) but this might be an option / something to check?

hmm, i didnt unplug anything from around the auto....

i know one thing i left unplugged for sure though.. the little wire that gives 12v to the motor that moves the steering wheel up and down...

but that looks like it only gives power to the one motor....

i did move that speedo needle by hand though... i bumped it accidently and then reset it... maybe i fucked that up... is there a proper way to reset it? could that have an effect on it?

It seems you didn't understand what I said.

The P R N D 2 L is switched via the switch on the side of the gearbox....

However the power that goes to this switch is from the "GAUGE" fuse...

The power that goes to the speed sender on the gearbox is also from the "GAUGE" fuse...

So to me it sounds like you managed to unplug the plug that feeds GAUGE power to the gearbox selector switch and the speed sensor (at the dash)...

Like I said tho I haven't checked the wiring diagrams so I can't say this is 100% certain

so by the speedo not working you mean it doesn't light up or it just doesn't come off zero?

not 100% sure but i'm pretty sure the speedo is from an sensor not a physical speedo cable.
As they say in the book, assembly is the reverse of dismantling, but slower cos you forgot where all the bits are

    hey,

The dash, speedo and needle lights up, but it doesn't move off zero...

Where is the gauge fuse? I checked the fuses under the drivers footwell... All good

I do run a Carwash though and did take it through for an underbody wash... Maybe something came off under the car...

I'll have a look some point this week..

The PRND21 lights and the speedo are driven from different sensors and thus different plugs.

If the PRND21 plug came out the car wouldn't start (the NSW is on the same plug)

I doubt the problem is under the car

    gay...

the only thing i left unplugged was the power to the steering wheel motor...

as for the rest of the dash, the tacho is rooted, but still gets a signal.. its the needle itself that is being gay... the fuel gauge is fucked.. but it always has been,, and there are only 2 plugs that go into the back of the dash..

2 white and 1 orange to chose from..

the orange one doesnt fit, so the two white ones are plugged in... i assume that is right.. there is also a seperate earth connected behind the temp gauge...

im trying to narrow down what it could be.. surely it cant be a dash problem coz the needle not working wouldnt effect the speed the car can go.. just like the fact that the tacho not working doesnt limit the revs i can do...(i know this sounds really basic... and is really basic, but i just need to work through it rationally)

so it must be a a sensor/sender issue... if its unlikely that something came off under the car, i must have left something unplugged...

i know i left one thing unplugged, but i doubt that it will have any effect on it...

but having said that... it is a toyota... so every little electrical component has an effect on something...

like my z10... not having headlights connected meant i couldnt start the car or put my windows up...

anyway.. ill plug in the only thing i forgot to replug and see how that goes...

on a side note.. rather than opening a new thread...

who has installed a clockspring before? or knows how to do it.. mine has arrived and i want to fix my shit and sell it..

    cheers again..

According to some UZZ30 diagrams I have the power to the steering wheel motor and the power to the dash are VERY closely related. You may have unplugged something in the wrong place.

i know that the one i unplugged was power to the motor coz i ran 12v from the battery to it to check if the motor was still working... 12v one side/earth other moved steering wheel up... reverse that moved it down...

which means i isolated the problem to a dodgy switch.. (as far as my steering wheel adjust goes anyway..)

do you think that that could be linked further, to dash power?

if anyone has a wiring diagram can they please check..

im the first to admit that i suck camel cock at electronics and reading wiring diagrams.. so please dont bother posting a link to one unless you can interpret it..

cheers again to all you guys for helping..

    Hi,

did this issue ever get sorted stomps? My ls400 sounds like it is doing something similar in regards to the auto box jumping and just being outright ghey! I know how the steering column motor works, and it also has an override too. So if there is something wrong with the height/lateral sensor you can bypass it.

Hey, a while ago now and the car is long gone... but from memory mine was something simple....

I'm fairly sure it was just a wire that came out the back of the plug... I remember cutting a plug off and soldering on a new one...suddenly the wheel worked again and the dash came alive.. I can't remember if it was a power or earth that came off but it was something stupid like that.

if the gear shifter indicators in dash stopped working
and speedo stopped working at same time
it is defenately the power to these two
they share same power and its normally the backup lights fuse
but its not your problem because yr speedo works
have u checked for diagnostic codes in the auto
