Default replacing ta22 rear wheel bearings

    Hi

The rear wheel bearings of my ta22 are well and truely shot, it sounds like a train is rolling along under the car. Ive had a look through the forums and found nothing specific to my plight. What i want to know is how to change them, i have a workshop manual for the celica but it isnt all that helpful.

So some tips and things to look, and maybe even a scan of a section in a workshop manual regarding the rear wheel bearings , for while im changing them would much appreciated

    Thanks in advance

Jack up back of car by the diff and put stands under the car.
    1. Take off rear wheels
    2. remove drum
    3. undo the 4 bolts holding on drum brake assembly to diff
    4. fit slidehammer to studs on axle and remove axel
    5. take said axle to local work shop to get old bearings removed and new ones pressed on.
    6. redo in reverse to assemble

This will probably take a few days so if you can do with your car then go for gold or else get a workshop to do the lot.

Only point i can think of which Stidnam hasnt covered is that you cant press the old bearings off.

This is my step by step
    1. Jack car up,
    2. Remove rear wheels
    3. Try to remove drum
    4. Realise its stuck on, and try to pry it off
    5. End up winding yourself by pulling drum off and hitting yourself in the stomach
    6. Drink beer
    7. Undo 4 bolts which hold the drum assembly to diff
    8. Flick a spring slightly so that it shoots over to the other side of the garage
    9. Drink beer
    10. Search for spring for 30mins
    11. Give up
    12. Go back and remove more bolts, this time ensuring that your face is between the spring and its intended destination
    13. Patch up hole in retina from spring
    14. Drink beer
    15. Try to remove axle
    16. Fail
    17. Make up dodgy slide hammer using old drum and a piece of steel welded together
    18. Drink beer
    19. Go to hospital after injuring self when the weld breaks on your dodgy slide hammer
    20. Drink beer
    21. Stab multiple times with screwdriver, before using a proper slide hammer to remove axle.
    22. Realise that the brake drum you welded stuff to was the "good" drum
    23. Take axle to first workshop to get old bearings removed and new ones pressed on
    24. Realise that workshop has tried to press off the old bearings, leaving you with an axle that is bent like a banana
    25. Source new axle
    26. Grind bearings off
    27. Press new bearings on
    28. Redo in reverse to reassemble
    29. Wonder why you still have 5 bolts left over
    30. Scratch head

All of the above i have either seen people do, or done myself (*mutters about stupid drum brake springs*)

You can bolt the wheel or the brake drum (reversed) to the axle to use as a ghetto slide hammer. A couple of firm tugs should see the axle heading on out.

I managed to do this job on my race car, so if I can do it, anyone can

Note - we did bend the axle face (what ever you call the flange where the wheel studs sit) when we pressed the wheel bearings off. Lesson learned!

Am i to understand it is best to take the axle to the mechanic to replace them?

I was kinda hoping not to so i could save myself a bit of dosh, coz i have to replace the panhard rod bushes and brake cylinders aswell and the labour that they would charge would be huge, that and i have alot of spare time.

You will need a press to do it yourself Frank. And the skills to cut off the old bearings but that shouldnt be too hard.

    Ahh ok, thanks
Are the bearings a tapered roller or ball and what are the dimensions, if it wouldn't trouble anyone of course.

    Thanks

Seriously, save yourself the drama, and take the new bearings and the axles to an engineering joint and have them press off the old ones and install the new ones. I had mine done at the local servo that does mechanical repairs and they charged bugger all.

Make sure you use an old steel wheel as your puller, if it has the tyre attached, it will be easier as you are using moving more mass and the axle will come out easier. Just make sure it is well secured on whatever stands you use, and keep your legs out from under the car.
