Default supra gearbox trouble please help

Gday Guys I have done a search, but still haven't found the answers I need
I am looking to buy a supra box preferably the w58, I have been offered one but I am having trouble working out if it is a 58 or 57.
It has a alloy sandwich plate which I know the w57 has and some w58's.
It has a stamp on the side of box 1-2. They are the only things that really give me any clues.Oh and in 5th gear 10 spins of the input shaft gives me 11.5 spins of the output.
    Is this box a w57 or 58?
Is the w58 or steel sandwich box really that much stronger?
    Cheers

    You have a W57

    10/11.5 = 0.86:1

All alloy sandwich plates are the same strength
All steel sandwich plates are the same strength.

Random chance it could be a W55 too.
Best be checking first gear ratio aswell.

Im led to believe that there is no diff in strength ( same internals ) the only diff ( some say !! ) is that the W 58 steel plate has less flex in it due to the steel sandwich plate.

Im putting 300+ rwkw through a W57 and have had no prob with it. Not even leaks from the sandwhich gaskets like some said may happen

The only other diff apart from steel plate is the 5th gear ratio

The sandwich plate supports the main bearings in the gearbox, so it's a given that the steel version is going to be more rigid and thus stronger overall than the alloy version. My personal experience is that alloy versions have a much shorter lifespan than steel ones! I have a collection of broken W5x boxes to prove it.

Oh and later W58's are stronger than earlier W58's, but the differences are minor. Wilbo and I have compared the two side by side so this isn't just conjecture.

Thanks for your help fellas, it's got me stuffed, I checked the first gear and it was roughly 1:3.2 which I think was w58 ratio's, will do another search. I am looking at about 200kw as well, maybe the 57 will do

Ahh just realised the w57 and 58 have the same first gear, well it looks like she's a 57 thanks for your help, maybe I will grab it and see how it goes.

What are the differences you are talking about between the W58s

There was a whole thread on this, might be on the old forums though... can't be arsed looking right now.

Suffice to say there are minor upgrades here and there, a couple of bearings and gears are slightly wider, so in theory it's stronger but there's not much in it.

    Read this PDF (GEARBOX COMPARISION)

I can also add to that document

    1) Alloy and Steel rear extension housings are not interchangeable

    Cheers

No, I know how to change gears. However, a combination of 2JZ torque, torsen LSD, 255 tyres and the occasional snap-change into 2nd gear has resulted in the demise of a few gearboxes.
