Default 1uz auto gearbox slipping coaster conversion

Hi all, please excuse me but I know bugger all about automatic gearboxes. Never owned one before or hardly driven them.. Anyhow..

Today was the first outing for the 1UZ Coaster! Very exciting after 6 months of work. But!

Checked all fluids, including auto and it looked ok.

The first attempt to drive it wouldn't even move when in gear, engine just free rev'd. Found out that autos need oil to drive, so chucked another 1 ltr in there as I lost a bit when I put new oil cooler on. Now it actually started to move, but slipping badly.

So chucked another 1 ltr in, and now it could actually drive but still really badly slipping, could only just get up a hill.

Dip stick was showing full on the hot line now but thought what the heck, put another .5 ltr in to see if it would help, but still feels the same. So decided not to put anymore in.

Confused now what is wrong.. Do I need more oil? Have I wired something up wrong? It is a Celsior 1uz with only the 1x ecu. So didn't think I could go too wrong.

Please help! It's been 6 months and im itching to get this thing going.. this is all that is holding me back now.

    Thanks
    Joel

Sounds like you dont (or didnt ) have enough fluid. Might be worth finding out how much they are supposed to hold (excluding torque converter) and drain and refill it.

Just as importantly, what grade of fluid did you use? is it the correct type for your transmission? I am no expert on A340s but I know that Borg Warner 85LEs (EB Falcons) dont react well (read as self destruct in no time) to the wrong fluid....

    Good luck.

    Edit...
Was it changing gears? or did it seem to take off and run in only one gear.... indicating limp home mode?

I put AT III in it.. hopefully the right kind but i'll confirm that.
It was changing gears. From D i dropped back to 1 and felt it shift back. But bit hard as we couldn't really get up over 30 or 40km/h with the slipping and I didn't want to push it.

    Hi,

If it's a A341E that is ussually found mated to 1uz's, It should take Type II Fluid, Toyota T-IV is backward compatible and you can get it at your local Toyota Dealer, this works best with the box.

Some people have used DEXRON III, however have noticed harsher shifting.

Is there any procedure to filling, checking oil etc? Do you check while idling or with it off?

I'm reading some forums that say you must use the toyota type iv fluid.. I don't mind using this, but don't really want to drop all of the type III and have same problem. i would have thought it would run on the dexton III? maybe not ideal, but good enough?

dexron 3 or 4 is fine. to check the level the gearbox has to be warm already. so take it for a drive, then switch off and check level again. if it still slips with the levels at right point then it's likely that the bands are worn out already.

Am i doing damage taking it for a drive while it is slipping?
The engine/box had 100,000km on it.. will be talking to importer if the box is stuffed..

not really.. well over short term anyway. if it had 100000k on it then it's pretty likely that the bands are worn out. give it a service (at their expense) oil, filter, and new bands an without a doubt it'll be as good as new

did you put the gearbox onto the motor? or did it come together and you just slapped it in the car?
