surely that is the fault of you, for not leaving an appropriate comment?
why not write something like "shup up bitch... oh and thanks for the info about blah blah"

there is nothing wrong with mateship, but Lambo is not talking about that kind of rep...

I do not think it was renamed, Since Toymods is intended to be a Technical car forum that is why when I say off Topic I mean Non Car Discussion.

what crack are you on heh heh

on old forums it was "off topic" or "the outhouse" etc
when we moved to new forums, it was renamed to "non-car discussion" to discourage the shite that was posted in the off topic section of the old forums... (i can't remember if it was first offtopic here as well.. my memory doesn't extend that far today )

that is why i draw a distinction between "off topic" (where anything goes.. on other forums) and "non-car discussion".. which is for DISCUSSION of non-car things.. not for posting shite..

    see the difference?

What I'm refering to are the times when there is a complete disregard for the rules. the most common example is when someone doesn't have enough rep to post in the classifides and decide to post in general car talk or membership and feedback with somthing for sale. Generally, there are a few neg reps and that persons rep starts heading south. that person comes back on, has a little winge then all of a sudden their rep starts heading north again.

It is this case where I would like to see the rep (I'm not an admin Mod) and remove the rep from the OP as well as hit the person who gave the positive rep in the first instance. This generally would only occur in threads that actually require moderation, if there are 2 people on here who are mates and make comments like STFU have some rep, then fine, they will probably have that much rep it is beyond the point of caring (ie >100 points)

General banter I don't care about, it is the pos rep given for threads that are against the rule that gets on my nerves. And If it were me I'd remove the rep for the OP, and completely Zero the rep giver, as well as any random "mates" reps to get them back up again.

Ideally the rep system should have a roof of 100 points that way neg rep becomes more of a useable. I just neg repped OC for a spelling mistake, and it hardly gets noticed

    Cheers

Yeah, but OC has enough rep to buy an African country!!

I do like your points there Simon, I think that's quite a valid reason to have the rep publicly viewable, and I think a roof would be good too (Really, what am I going to do with 7000+ rep anyway?? Have a wank?? Got teh pron for that!!)

Just want to play devil's advocate (well, this is actually what we do when we are going to make a change to the control system at work), what possible abuse would making the rep publically viewable have?? Does that possible abuse out weigh the possible benefits??

i still notice neg rep (i'm sure mods can check, but i hardly ever get neg rep... most of that is just bitchiness from the noob brigade, but occasionally was deserved )
if i deserve it, it can make me rethink what i posted

to me rep is not the number, but the comments and appreciation for stuff you have posted.
i think it would be a good idea to cap the rep number.... but then again, the number has no meaning.. it should be the comments that encourage/discourage.

i guess over the long long term, it can indicate to new users who has been around and more active (or more whoring) for longer.... but.. again, that doesn't matter that much, and high rep does not indicate quality of posts in every section

4DaDrift, I think you will find those with large amounts of rep powah will only 'retaliate neg' if you have negg'd them for a shitty reason (like they have politely corrected you somewhere and you neg them for it). If you give them a bit of neg because they have said something wrong, then people like OC are very unlikely to neg you back, even if your just being pedantic about spelling (though I have a feeling that some of OC's shitty spelling/gramma comes from trying to use a Japanese keyboard and computer).

So yeah, don't fear retaliation if you are legitimately trying to give somebody a message, as unfairly dealt neg rep can be reversed anyway and the admin mods are very reasonable people.

    capitalisation.......

in the big scheme of things, the order is something like:
    not using paragraphs
not using full stops for sentences
    using l337 speak
    poor spelling
    poor grammar
    FULL CAPITALS
    .....
    ......
    ..........
not using capitals at the start of sentences?

does it really make it that hard to read?
it is not often that i string more than 2 sentences together within a paragraph, so it is easier to read anyway

i would suggest someone pedantic enough to neg rep for not using capitals at the start of sentences...... has issues

as for retaliatory rep. if someone neg reps for me an inanle stupid reason (there are a number of people that do that ) then i will neg rep them for stupid use of rep system... it all balances in the end i guess.

Owen, you are probably correct in saying that it would be abused if public, but it is abused anyway.

Putting a roof on the number and constructing a set of levels of achievement based on rep, (ie post in classifieds at say 20, avatar at 50, access to non car at 80 for instance) and making neg rep 10% of your rep and pos rep 1 or 2 only so it is easier to lose rep and harder to gain rep, would hopefully make people think about the ramifications of their post.

    Cheers

maybe you could allow people to rep for any post, but only posts in the sections you want (like tech etc) contribute points, the rest has the comment ('awseom story in the generel secion bro +rep', etc) but its grayed out and doesnt contribute points, just like someone with no rep powers.

o'man ra23 i like the idea about being able to sell panels, but requiring more rep to sell something bigger or maybe to sell something non-toyota related.

i allways think that rep should count towards how you are seen as a respectable member, and therefore be more likely to trust someone with high rep to be a good person to deal with.

maybe then it would be better to restrict the classified section for VIEWING only, for the people who dont have enough rep. ie they can still ADVERTISE a rare panel for sale or toyota only part, and therefore benefit toymods members who want to buy, but cannot VIEW other FOR SALE threads until their rep is high enough, or they have made certain contributions (ie, rep, financial membership, min number of tech posts etc...)
