Default '86 Hilux 2WD engine conversation options.

Alright I have bought a hilux, it has I think a 3Y motor in it... I haven't actually seen it yet though! But it is a 1986 2WD.

I am wondering what engine options that I have...

I don't know much about Toyota motors, this is the first one that I have owned.

What are the easy drop in engines? I don't mind carbies either, so some of the older stuff would be cool if they are relatively cheap and easy to do.

The cheaper the better to, trying to keep the cost down as much as possible. But I still something that will be fun to drive.

    Any info would be great.

    Thanks

You need to give us a budget.

Yeah sorry I know there is no budget in there...

At this stage I'm just after ideas... I have so many options though, I would love to put a 13BT in there for a start.

I know there is the 1J option, but they make the whole car a little front heavy I'm told... then the is the commodore v6, which has the bonus of being very cheap but once again heavy.

Mainly I guess I'm wondering about the 4cycl Toyota motors. I don't know enough about them though, which ones are good, easy to find and get parts for? I can't even tell the capacity from the engine numbers, I know that 4AG is 1600... That's about it though! What would work well... I guess around about 2L and twin cam, also I'm a big fan of webbers so carbie would be cool as well? I am assuming this is going to be the cheapest option as well.

That probably made no sense at all, I'm pretty tired. But hopefully someone gets the idea!

But we need a *rough* budget to help you.

No point in suggesting something like a 1JZ unless you are will to spend 6-8k on an engine conversion.

If all you have is 2k, then maybe an 18RG is better.

If you want cheap, then put another 3Y in there.
If you want cheap, a bit bigger, and a bit more power/economy/reliability, and maybe a bit of a challenge, then a 4Y-E would be the go.

This is old, but its a good reference for newbies.

Ok, I see your point... I guess for the right money, I can get anything to fit obviously!

Alright a 4Y-E... This is my problem, what is that? Capacity?

    Also is an 18RG 1800cc?

I'll change my question somewhat, what 4cycl Toyota engine can I put in and put some webbers on it? That should narrow it down a bit! :-)

Sorry to make it difficult, I'm just indecisive... It's currently half stripped and getting painted by my brother and I haven't even seen the car yet! Oh and it has already hit a roo since I owned it to!

Oh and I'll say $4000 as a reasonable budget for it, but cheaper is better!

1g-gte is a neat swap, although $4k could be pushing it, depending on how much of the work you can do yourself.
22R isn't going to be much of an upgrade for you.

The 18r-g is a great little 2L engine, and will make a decent bit more power & fraction more torque than the 3y... but your chassis being 1986, you could run into emissions/engineering dramas sticking the older 18r in there

The 4Y is a 2.2L engine, and makes about 30% more power & torque than the 3Y

Thanks for the help, that is exactly what I was after with that web-site! I have plenty of time to do some research on those engines!

I found some links to other threads... I just needed somewhere to start!

Although I have one other question... How compatiable are Toyotas? The one I'm thinking about is the 22R, which is 2.4L... Will the 18RG twin cam head bolt onto the 22R block? that would be a fairly cool motor I would think?

I've also seen the commodore v6 thing? Doesn't seem very popular though?I thought given the price, it would be a good thing?

    Thanks again guys!

I think the commodore motor is actually quite a popular conversion, just perhaps not on here
