it sounds what you want is a "cry for help" type thread? for people that have no friends or family they can talk to?
i still think MSN/yahoo/messenger type things are better for communication in situations like this, rather than a public statement in a forum..

plus, those that really need the help are usually the ones that never seek it out

I can see serious problems with this idea.. No matter how well intended.. no matter what level of moderation there is.. There are some serious wankers around that will exploit peoples issues...

Moderators dont spot things in an instant... all it takes is one person to give misguided advice for massive potential to do harm..

Not to mention the simple issue of: THIS IS THE INTERNET... a public forum.. there is no controlling what people will do with the information gained from such a thread...

I've gotta say... the more i think about it, the less i like the idea. It is very well intentioned but probably won't have the desired results. I don't think it'll turn ugly (ie: people making others feel small or get insulting) but i doubt it will be constructive enough. It will probably end up being about trivial matters.

I mean, it's a great idea for all those little issues... "I just did blah, now my gf won't talk to me, what do I do", but if someone was discussing a serious issue and didn't frame it as a serious issue (which, let's face it, is entirely likely given a predominantly male forum membership) then the potential for a lot of damage to be done is definitely there.

I mean, I feel as bad as the next person about what happened to James (moreso really, since I didn't pick up on it), but I think this thread idea will help the people who don't really need a lot of help, and not really help (and possibly hurt) those who do.

There are a LOT of other better equipped and serviced forums out there for exactly these kind of issues... plus lifeline can be all kinds of awesome (quite a few psychs I know volunteer there)
