    Exclamation ae86/20v custom airbox

    Hi guys

I need a custom airbox for my 20v ae86 conversion. I was just wondering how some of you who have done this conversion went about getting one made up or where you got it made up. Its been the hardest part of my project to get

Ive been trying to make one out of galvanized steel sheet but I cant get it air tight(or close to)

(is there anyone with the tools and meterials willing to make one )

thanks, any kind of reply will help

i've got one made and it cost me about $250 out of alloy. If you wanna have a go yourself i'd grab some 3mm alloy sheet or close to it and some cardboard. Fold the cardboard up into what shape you want it but make sure its a little bigger than it needs to be and trim it down. This way youll get it pretty close to airtight and cardboard is alot easier to work than any metal. then just bend some of the edges over so you can bolt it down and then if you need anything welded take it to a fabricating shop and tell them what you want done. youl spend like $20 on them welding little tabs on or whatever and then drill some holes for bolts or screws or whatever then hey presto. Hope that helps

the template was made of cardboard and is long gone!! i'll get some measurements and try to post a piccy. i don't run trumpets as they wouldn't fit in the box the rear of the box is very close to the clutch master so they would fit on 1 2 3 but not on 4 so i didn't worry about it.

    That what you after?

When i made that one i measured everything up carefully and then spent a few hours cutting 2mm and 1.6mm plate alloy out by hand with a hacksaw and then took it to a mate who is an aluminum fabricator. All up cost about $100. Much more cost effective than paying someone else to do it.
Of course this exact design wont work for a 20v, but im sure with the same technique you can make a similar one.

Takai, is there any reason why you made the top plate removable? great looking box by the way

Ive been considering on and off switching to down-port injection. The removable plate was there so i can still entertain the option without having to consider changing the box significantly.

    Oh god yes!

Just wondering what tools you used to cut out the inlet hole?

hrmmz ive made a few box all of them have failed or were not stable, i might give it a go again but need better meterials then the thin steel sheet i have. Are there any recommended places I get some thicker alloy/aluminium sheet in melbourne?

Dumb Aluminum (actually Smart Alloy) will sell you sheets, but wont cut them down to size. I get my alloy from Capral here in SA, and they cut down to size quite cheaply, and do offcuts etc.
The inlet hole i cut out with a 3" holesaw, and the trumpet holes with a 60mm holesaw.

I used 2mm for the back plate (the bit which is welded to the trumpets, and then 1.6mm for the rest. It is still quite light too.

Capral aluminium in Preston can sell you aluminium (believe it or not).

Haven't had a huge amount to do with them, but they seemed happy to chop lengths that I wanted even on a Sat morning. Price seemed high, but maybe no higher than normal for aluminium.

Capral tend to be slightly higher than other places for cut alloy, because they charge a cutting fee.
But compared to say Bunnings its cheap as chips.

jsut remember the clearances on a 100kw with quads is very different to a 20v with quads.

in Takai's car he has plenty of clearance on inlet #4, but on a 20v if you were using those tumpets alone there is no clearance between both the brake booster and clutch master cylinder. my filter socks dont even go on the last inlet properly.

measure it up first! Takai's design WILL NOT work on a standard 20v in an AE71 or AE86.

Yes, Dom is right, but mainly the clearance issue is due to the angle which the inlet manifold sits on. You will normally need to make the box slightly smaller and angled around that end to get it to fit.
