Default HKS twin plate clutch for JZA80

here's the blurb on it: " Please note that you must purchase several parts from the 3rd generation supra in order for this clutch to work. We know that sounds odd, but yes, you do use several parts from the 3rd generation supra as HKS had intended it. For your convenience, we stock all these parts. We call this package the "Toyota - HKS - Parts for Twin & Triple HKS Clutches" and you can purchase it from the 1993-98 Supra Clutch page. This package also includes special flywheel bolts and a special throwout bearing."

now call me silly, but does this sound slightly dodgy to anyone else?

the "extra toyota parts package" only costs ~$200, but the whole "several parts from a 3rd gen supra" is either wrong or dodgy to my mind.

For $1400 tho, that hks twin plate clutch is mighty tempting!

will they tell you what the extra parts are? you may be able to source them yourself cheaper.

Sounds like Dellow.- you can buy their bellhousing but you have to buy all the other stuff they make ( fork bearing race etc) to be able to use it.

seems to be a lot of parts there already

what you can't see is the thrust bearing and carrier, but.. what else??

the GTR one pictured on jap site is a push type, not pull type, so that might explain some missing bits....

but surely they should be able to tell you what bits are needed..as stated...

oh... on the jap site, for 2J (but not 1J...) it says
    2:取付時別途純正部品が必要。

seperate genuine parts needed for install....

i wouldnt bother wih twin plate for street.

added rotational weight, harder on the syncros due to rotational inertia, and according to my clutch guy, way too easy to fry when slipping in 'everyday' driving, raosing the plates and rather exxy to replace.

i enquired about small twin clutch pack for the 1uz, and have been totally convinced out of it in preference towards a heavy single, sprung 5-6puck

the clutch/flywheel package is 7.4kg... which has to be lighter than a standard flywheel?

for me, deciding factor would be what the left leg likes...
the HKS twin plate holds 980Nm torque and 440kw.
    and triple, 1470Nm and 740kw.....

hmmm, how much heavier is the leg pressure from a heavy single to get clamping force for 980Nm torque?

    yup

an example of an option of that level included a modified ford clutch, 240mm, 3480lbs (!!) clamping pressure, 5-6puck sprung or solid centre, about $600. replacement discs $120.

    wow

still, the rotational inertia of twin discs and carrier would have to play hell on the syncros during gear shift

this isn't another example of going the easier/cheaper route?

seriously tho, I'm assuming that was to suit the w58 rahter than the v160?

edit: ed mentioned the small dia twin plates above stu

no, not cheaper/easier. considering the cost of this engne build! ha! unlikely

the guy asked me if i expected to drive it on the road, then proceeded to completely talk me out of a twin plate system - which is what i walked in asking for

may I enquire as to the location of this guy?
another one of your penrith dudes?
'cause, well, I wasn't too keen on the twin plate to begin with. higher load, the good ones with sprung hubs cost more, and they rattle like buggery.

Mind you, a 5-puck wheel rattles terribly when getting into a driveway
