Default What alternative alternator options for 18RG / 3TGTE etc?

Well the alternator on the 18RG is just about cactus, and despite having 2 or 3 spares i could test/rebuild, i would much rather look for an alternative that actually has some performance!!

Has anyone found anything out there either from another car/engine (toyota or inferior) or from Bosch etc that fits an 18R or a 3T-GTE??

I want at least 60A output, and internal voltage regulation.

Something interesting I have found in my searches is that an 18R alternator fits on a 3T-GTE. From the factory, the 3T-GTE alternator is internally regulated, but of course finding one of these would not be easy, or cheap!

My thoughts are late model 22R-E from a hilux etc, Y-series engines....??

All help is appreciated! Whatever I find I will be certain to share with the tractor engine community

Nope....the 18R alternator has the "end mounts" on the alternator body....

... those 5M, 7M and 1UZ alternators go in the middle of the mount on the engine block, whereas the 18R alternator body is the other way around...

    see the pic?

Sorry, I'm trying to understand what you mean with regards to the "end mounts". Have you looked at a 1G setup?

Nope, no good. He means that he wants the tabs on the alternator rather than on the alternator mount (1G and 7M and most others by the look have "barrels" on the alternator for fitment)

try the astron series engines, my 18r came with a mitsubishi alternator on it, I don't know from what year, make or model however . Note I am assuming astron as that was the first old school mitsubishi engine that popped into my head.
I still have the alternator at home so i will see if i can find some sort of reference number on it.
the main issue with it was that the pulley came very close to water pump pulley i think. but i never had any problems running it.

Would it not be possible to have one of your existing alternators rebuilt with heavy-duty internals? Or does it need to be physically larger to get the required output?

I had the XF Falcon alt guts fitted to the toyota case. Just need to pack the rear mount with a few washers.

Have a look through this catalogue.

Dont bother using "save target as" because you will only get the index page.
For others, look on page 47 for a pic of the 18R external reg alternator.

checked the shed and there are no markings on the mitsubishi alternator except for the diamonds at the back.

an interesting subnote is that there is a bosch alternator on the 3tgte in the shed as well and it uses an extended arm to set it further away from the engine.

I'm using a Ford Fairland/telstar Bosch alternator that gives 60 amps peak output. I believe that a falcon eb alternator fits on the mount and will give 75 amps peak output. To use my ford one I had to put a washer between the mounts and change the pulley from a v belt one to a KE 70 pulley. I dont really like it though because its a one wire alternator that monitors voltage at the battery terminal and not at the distribution point of the harness, giving a potentially lower voltage. Bosch alternators dont really give a great voltage at low rpm as well and generally charge at 13.8 when hot, instead of the standard 14.2 for a toyota alternator. This information has all been checked out by myself, now for the word of mouth possibilitys.

Apparently a KE70 alternator wll bolt straight up and is a internally regulated Bosch 40 amp. Also a Nissan Pintara alternator will also bolt up with a change of pully. Which model I'm not too sure but get the old verniers out and see for yourself. Good luck, Maurice.

i ended up getting a generic and largish (~100amp) bosch alternator and making an new lower mount to suit.

any reason to drag out the welder and flash-blind myself

that way i got new alternator and closer to the engine (smaller belt) - bad thing is that the large output terminal is close to the engine mount.
