Default help - 5EFE Auto transmission Problem

    I have swapped the engine of my Fiat UNO (mini car) and specs are;

    Engine Toyota 5EFE
    Transmission 3-speed auto (non electronic)
    ECU 5E-FE 4WD

    Problem:
RPM goes more than 3000 at 80km/h (50mph) which is very high. is it because of ECU as it is for 4WD and my car is FWD auto or there is any problem in gear box?

    Please help!

    Sounds like an interesting swap.

does the gearbox feel like it is slipping?

And are you running the same size (diametre) wheels as the Toyota the engine came from? as smaller wheels will obviously give you lower overall gearing (thus Higher engine revs for any given speed).

If it's only a 3 speed, it probably doesn't have overdrive. 1:1 ratio top gear and those RPMs don't seem so high anymore. Especially if it is running smaller tyres.

Tyres are 155/70R/13 (tyres are not that small)
is the ECU has nothing to do with gear shifting as it is for 4WD and my car is FWD. do you think that ECU can make any difference if i install "5E-FE 3AT" ?

Is it changing into all 3 gears? If it is, I don't see the problem. It is a non-overdrive box on a small motor. Most small cars do around 3500rpm @ 100km/h. Without overdrive, 3000 @ 80kh/h is not unreasonable.

If the box has no electronics, the ECU will be doing nothing to effect the trans. And not having a trans connected to the ECU will not make it run the engine any different.

yes, it is shifting all 3 gears.
Do you think that its normal for 1.5L engine to reach 80Kph @ 3000 RPM? (and its a mini car with big engine)
    i believe it should give 80Kph with 2000 RPM and 115Kph @ 3000.
I'm sure that there is some problem with it. its either gearbox or the ECU.
Tyres are small but not too small. they can only make 6 - 7 % affect. I hope someone can pinpoint the problem so that i could fix it..............

It sounds like you dont have a problem my girlfriends corolla runs at about 3000 rpm at 100kph in overdrive and it is a four speed auto with overdrive

What reason would you have for changing the ECU?

I dont think it would work anyway, IE I dont think you engine would run with the wrong ecu connected.

If the gearbox is going through all three gears normally, it s a gearing issue, and changing the Computer will acheive nothing.

Hey there mate.... to me it sounds like u dont have overdrive hooked up....

i use to have a sera with the 5efhe motor auto, and put a manual 4efte motor in but left the auto gearbox.... these gear boxs have no electronics, apart from the overdrive switch, they have nothing to do with the Ecu at all... beautiful and easy to work with box....

I would be making sure that your box has or doenst have overdrive before u do anything else...

if u do decide u think its still the ecu, i have the 5efhe auto computer sitting here

You are right mate,,,, it doesnt have OD

So you think 4WD ecu has nothing to do with gear shifting? doesnt ECU controls fuel mixing and RPM according to gear box attached to it?

No. It gives no fark for what gear you're in. It calculates load, and uses fuel/timing accordingly.

RPM at a speed is only related to your gear ratios. The ECU only runs the motor from what you've said. Try and find a 4 speed automatic and setup a switch for the electronic overdrive. I'd expect to see a 400 rpm drop at that speed at a 1.1:1 overdrive.
