    Default 7AFE Not starting...

    Hey Guys,

My cousin is down from QLD, and his 7AFE Holden Nova (Corolla) is not wanting to start. It was running, but he gherni'd the engine whilst the car was turned off, and now fails to start. We have replaced the Dizzy, replaced the factory ECU, and so on and so forth.

The car is getting spark (We pulled the spark plugs out and connected them to a spark plug, and we could visually see a spark) and there is a strong smell of fuel, so im going tosay that the car is definatly getting fuel. We also hooked up a fue pressure gauge, and it has fuel pressure.

We also have a 4AFE Dizzy and ECU. Will these work on a 7AFE engine? He wants to drive back to QLD, but we are unable to even get the car running. If someone could help out with some ideas or suggestions, it would be very much appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Shazza.

Do the leads have water in them?

Check each lead is sparking, pull them out and put them near the strut tower bolts and see if the spark jumps (will probably have to be quite close and you should hear it)

Did you replace the dizzy cap? or at least take it + the leads off and clear the water out?

Yeah, we chucked a whole new dizzy and leads on it, and still nothing. It fires using a 4AFE dizzy and ECU, but doesnt start. Sometimes it will start for like 2 seconds running rough as, then just die.

Could it be that because we're using a 4AFE Dizzy and ECU on a 7AFE?

If the plugs all match up it probably isn't that, might be best to change it back to the 7AFE just to see if there's any change now that it's had a chance to dry out... since you swapped the whole dizzy over the timing is probably out, but shouldn't be out enough to stop it running

Are they air flow meter? Check it hasn't got water in it, same with the air filter

MAP. All A-series EFI engines are MAP apart from some GZEs and silvertop 20Vs.

Unless it's a DLI model (which is probably isn't), then it doesn't have a crank angle sensor, that's done by the distributor.

Troubleshooting a 7A which doesn't start is as follows:

ENGINE HARD TO START OR WILL NOT START"

    Fault in:
    1) Security system. Override and then attempt to restart
    2) ALT or AM1 fusible links. Check/replace
    3) Circuit opening relay or ECu relay. Check/replace
    4) Fuel supply. Test fuel pump + pressure
    5) Engine management wiring. Check wiring + terminals clean and secure, esp. distributor/coil
    6) Ignition coil. Check resistances
    7) Injectors. Test injector circuit
    8) Engine flooded. Use WOT when cranking to clear

    ENGINE STARTS THEN STALLS

    1) Moisture under dizzy cap. Remove & check/replace
    2) Incorrect idle speed. Check for vac leaks
    3) Faulty engine management wiring. See above
    4) Faulty idle speed control valve (ISCV). Check terminal voltages and pin resistances, check connection secure
    5) Fuel supply. See above

I've got the AE102 service manual in front of me or nearby almost all the time if you need any more info
