Default AE82 Bigport to Smallport conversion

Ok guys, just wondering what i'll need to do as far as the wiring goes. I'm not exactly familiar with the two systems. I'm obviously getting the engine loom from the ae92, but will this need to be modified to go into the ae82, and if so, what am i up against, and would it be easier to just use the fuse box from the ae92 or will it plug into the ae82 fuse box, and lastly where does the fuel pump wiring come into play, where abouts does it plug into and .....

actually i'll sum it up.....what will i need to do to put the smallport loom in.

    there that makes it easier.

Also, can i use a bigport dizzy on a small port, i've just had new seals put in the bigport one.

i would recommend using the smallport ECU, loom and dissy. There are differences between the smallport and bigport dissys....

To modify, it would be easiest to lay out the two looms next to each other, and strip off all the loom tube and tape from each... then work out how the bigport loom connected to your car, and then make the smallport loom connect in the same manner (by taking plugs from the bigport loom and putting onto the smallport loom).

There are things which you can remove, but it will all make sense when you strip the two looms down. I find its easiest to maintain the shape of the loom by adding cable ties after you strip off the loom tube and tape, then once you are done its easy replace the tape and tubing.

I would keep the AE82 fuse box too, there isnt much that connects from the engine loom to the fuse box in the engine bay. If you dont have aircon, that makes it easier again.
    ...... butt scratcher?!

I'm not able to use the smallport loom. It has been majorly butchered as i've found out today.

As long as i have the engine running for now. i'll be extremely happy, And i can find a smallport loom from somewhere later on.

Now i know that the engine will run....but how well will it run?

it will run fine. Swap the bigport injectors and Distributor to the smallport, along with the TPS and coolant temp sensor. Run the bigport loom on the engine, plumb the bigport intake air temp sensor to the smallport intake pipe.

Summarised: swap all sensors etc from bigport to smallport, connect bigport loom, bolt engine in, away you go.

heres a list of things to do for the conversion that i've done up. If i have forgotten something, please inform me

    Smallport Conversion

Drop Engine oil and gearbox oil from Bigport
Unplug all electronics from Bigport, labbeling each plug.
Undo fuel Lines after relieving fuel pressure
remove all coolant hoses and radiator.
    Disconnect exhaust
    Pull driveshafts
    Drop bigport out
    Remove A/c piping/radiator/fan/dryer/condenser
    -----------------------------------------------------------
    Replace appropriate gaskets/seals on Smallport
    Replace Water pump on Smallport
    Replace Timing belt On smallport
    Remove A/c Pump from Smallport
    Install PowerSteer pump on Smallport
Put Bigport TPS sensor on smallport
    Put Bigport Distributor on Smallport
Put All appropriate Sensors on Smallport
    Put Bigport Injectors on smallport
Put Gearbox on Smallport, check clutch.
    Put Exhaust manifold on Smallport
    -----------------------------------------------------------
    Put smallport in AE82
    Connect exhaust
    Connect all power steering hoses
Replace Fuel filter, Attach fuel supply.
    Install radiator/all coolant hoses
Connect all appropriate plugs, bolt all earth cables to body
Plumb Air Intake Sensor into Air intake
    Replace Spark plugs
    Attach Ignition Leads

i am also going to undertake this conversion and just want to clear up some things..

    1. in the above mentioned install (using bigport ECU and loom)will there be any power loss?

2.are there any extra sensors on the smallport ecu that need to be plumbed into the engine?

    3. I will be running bigport cams.. will there be a need for any further modification to allow for this?

    any help appreciated and repped

    1. There may be a slight power drop from the 100kw's at the fly, as you'll need to run the smaller bigport injectors, but apparently the maps are very very similar.

    2. No, but you will have to swap all the sensors from the bigport over to the smallport. There is an air intake temp sensor that will need to be plumbed into the intake somewhere, i'm just drilling a hole in my intake pipe and putting it in there.

    3. No, but you will want to check the valve clearances after (reshim)
