Default 2tg straight cut timing gear

    Hey Guys,

I am assembling my motor at the moment and have found myself pondering whether or not I should be using the standard timing gear. I obtained a straight cut timing gear set to suit a 2tg and many people have told me that they will be:

    a)stronger
b)Create more power due to less drag than a chain
c)be quite loud, creating some kind of whine.
d)Very hard to get and sought after

Now, having these items always seemed appealing but now that I'm down to the crunch, I'm not sure how suitable they will be for my application. If they are as loud as people say they are, will they be ok for an everyday driver?...Or am I going to attract un-wanted attention from authorities. I feel these parts are more suited to a race engine. (Perhaps I should be selling them to someone who could use them?)

they are not so common, but i know of a brand new set for sale, and they come up on yahoo auctions from time to time.

they will make more noise, but the main problem for a daily, is that they will wear. for a race car, you don't worry so much, but for a daily, doing a lot of k's, how long will they last?

then again, they are solid gears.. surely they will last a while

i reckon if you have them, check em on, see how it goes. if they are too noisy, pull them off.
you may not actually get that much for them if you sell either...

Didn't the old Gilmer gears for Holden Reds etc only last months if street driven or is this an old wives' tale I haven't managed to let go of?

Mmmk....I was pretty keen to throw them on, but someone who had some in a different motor was telling me they couldn't drive the thing for more than half an hour, before they got a headache! Lol. I'd prefer not to go nuts with the sound deadener. I'd love to see/hear one in action.

I thought that Gilmer was the name given to the toothed belt system (the same as a supercharger or indeed the same as a modern belt driven engine).

I like the sound of straight cut (spur gear) cam timing gears, gearboxes etc. It would prlly drive me crazy if I put up with it every day for extended periods of time though.
    YelloRolla's KE20 1/4mi = 11.32 @ 119mph @ 22psi on slicks
    12.44 @ 113 mph on 165 wide street tyres
210rwkw - not bad for a smelly 3TGTE running pump fuel.

I am confused. Gilmer are definitely the toothed belt pulleys. Bah!!

What was the name of the straight cut gear sets you could get for the old Reds and V8s?
