Tom is worried his whole Toymods presence would disappear overnight I think if we got rid of all the jibba-jabba!

I think it is very nice of you to give up a few weekends to help with the server migration, and to redo the table thingamy i don't understand, for the benefit of not only club members, but forum dwellers as well.

you are going to donate your time to help right?

I would not give database access to some random like me but it should only take 5 minutes to do what I am suggesting.
Additionally I don't know anything about the current server structure or migration plans and I don't want to step on the toes of the guys that have been keeping it up for this long... obviously they have put in a lot of hours over the years.. but if anyone wants to get in touch with me for some help, I'm more than happy to be able to give something back to the Toymods community which has helped me many times...
If the migration is supposedly gonna take several weekends though... then you definitely need my help.

time is always an issue, and having someone that knows it inside out always helps.

send an email anyway... you don't have to be a "random" anymore

Deleting threads (even bad ones) isnt a good idea.
You never know what info youll need in the future.
You also probably wont find enough bad threads to delete that will make a difference.

So what kind of spec'ed server does this site run on at the moment?
    What are you moving to?

A forum ive worked on in the past thats almost exactly 10 times the size of the Toymods forum runs perfectly on:
Web server - Quad Operon 2400, 8GB RAM
DB server - Dual Xeon 3200, 12GB RAM

    Hi,

I am not sure what the existing server is, but I'm hoping we are moving to an IBM Z9 Enterprise server, specifically the Z9 EC S58. Sure it weighs over 2 tons and chews up 18Kw of electricity to run... but hey... we do want something big, fast and reliable!

    ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/common/ss...D01096USEN.PDF

Oh... here is our current server....

    http://www.vintage-computer.com/images/imsai8080on.jpg

In its day it was a top performer. We even upgaded it to a Z80, running at 5MHz and are using banked memory (2 x 64K). We also got quad 160Kb 8inch floppies running now.

It's not that big of a deal, although in saying that I'm sure we'll all notice the improvement once migrated.

Someone along the way in this thread mentioned Twiki.
We use this at work and it is a really useful way to get a lot of info stored in a easy/quick acccessable way. Dont know how much time some of the mods on here have but there is definately something in it worth looking at.

I dont think that it is suitable for all the sections but maybe for some parts like the classifieds/longer threads which contain lots of info (like the TIO thread).

If anyone is interested just drop me a PM and I can explain more about how it all works and security/editing/anything else you want to know.

Might be a solution to speeding up the server as I am sure we are running a slower server at work..!! something like a commodore 64 I reckon?

    Cheers
    Nathan

Is it just my computer, or has Toymods suddenly gone slow again? It was fantastic for a couple of weeks, now it just sits there with the grey background and the logo in the top left corner, and says "Looking up ads2.toymods.org.au..." (that's not a typo, that is exactly what it says) for up to about 30 seconds to a minute, then loads normally. It wouldn't be a big deal, bit it does this for every single page, and is bringing back memories of the old server (shudders).

    Hi,

Yes, mine is doing the same also. It does seem to take about 20-30 secs to load each page, even going backwards.

I will let the forum tech-head know what is happening.
