Default AFM swap question using SAFC

Guys I have a question for all here when using a safc is it possible to change airflow meters and also if afm’s were changeable can it be possible to do a vane type to karman vortex type swap or can u only swap vane for vane and vice versa why im asking is cause theres an option to set what kind of afm is used so maybe there was a chance that a vane afm can be swapped for a karman vortex one while using the safc
I don’t know much about how afms work so can someone clarify this for me

I would assume the safc will only allow same type afm swaps...

Since vane and vortex work in different ways, the signal is going to be quite different too. I haven't seen anything really on the signal both give out but vane changes the voltage, and from what i've heard vortex is frequency based? Never had one so i've never looked into it

yes, karmen vortex is frequency based. dont know about the duty cycle, but id assume 50%..... squarewave up and down 5v to 0v... check input sensors on www.autoshop101.com

hmm all i wanted to do is get rid if that shitty vane afm and replace with something better be it karman , maf, hot wire etc

will any others be compatible just seen the safc menu and there was a place to change the afm types so it got me excited lollll
so i thought maybe if i swapped the afms to somethign similar but not restrictive without spending heaps of money it would be good
but looks like no is the answer

    I don't think you'll have any luck.

First off, you'd need to sort out an air temp sensor, because the Toyota one is in the AFM.

I don't think you'll find many AFM's that have an output signal like the Toyota one, which goes backward from 5V-0V (well, ~4.3-0.3V). Having said that, I'm not entirely sure how the Toyota vane AFM's work, because they tend to almost fully open the minute they get boost.

Failing finding a hot-wire that works a similar way, I don't think the SAFC would have the resolution to swap everything around perfectly, I could be wrong on that though.

There are other options, mainly from the States which enable you to use a MAF and have it programmable. That said, they cost about as much as a standalone ECU, so they don't make much sense here.

hmm looks like hard work temp sensor prob can be pulled out from another toyota afm
but by the looks of things its better to get the same vane type afm but a bigger size from another toyota

the engine im using is a 1g-gte so mayeb a 7mge one will fit as they a vane type arent they ??

any other toyota vane type afms around that might be bigger than the 1g-gte one and have the same pin configuration ??

    cheers

The 1GGTE has the biggest of the Toyota vane AFM's, the 7MGE *apparently* has a slightly tougher spring pressure, but that's about it.

BUGGER there goes that option as well
any other cars with a bigger afm and same pin config
might have to head down to some wreckers
see if the mazda 929 one will fit they seem to be barges lollllll
not that i have any hope they priob going to be totally different
    maybe a camry/cressida ???????

If you're after a bigger one, it's not going to be from a Toyota, and if you choose something from someone else, you're going to run into pin compatibility and output signal issues. I'd just be optimising what you have until you can afford a proper ECU and piss off the AFM altogether.

yeah its prob better to just use the same afm and tune it with the safc
new mortgage will not allow for a standalone ecu lolllll
    thanks for the replies lads

arent yota afm flap types good for like... ok tuning to maybe around 450hp?

see if you can run a Perfect Power SMT-7. its a piggyback but it can simulate AFM signal for ya to remove the afm totally. not to mention its cheap =) or something...

That's an interesting development...got a link to info about this? As far as AFM goes, they give great resolution, and as far as I know an SAFC gives +/- 50%, so you can get away with a fair change. I think you've got one of the biggest though, not sure what you can find that's better. If you get something tho, I'll have your old AFM
