Default Possible project - 1jzgte vvti into RA celica

Got a possible new project soon, im chasing ideas, and comments on if this has been considered?
I have searched the forum with different words and phrases for an hour and cant find anything at all about it. I figured someone may have tried it>
    Anyway, point being.
Maybe i could get some help from the vvti 1j gurus about the pros and cons of this engine over the non-vvti one.
Somewhere along the line i heard that they werent as reliable when they have had a fair bit of work done to them, internals ect.

But alas! think it would be a good one off, if anyone could start me off would be much appriciated!

one big factor...probably you already know, aftermarket options will be a big one..also yes like the 1uz, the later models become weaker.

Can you elaborate on this please, or is this your opinion?

The vvti 1jz has the same rods as the non-vvti 1jz for the entirety of production of both engines. The cranks also share the same part numbers until July 99. Piston part numbers are not the same as you'd expect.

Non-vvti blocks from April 96 (almost the end of non-vvti 1j production) also share the same blocks as the vvti engine upto March 2001.

I would have thought the vvti engines are same size, if not smaller then the non vvti..?

I have seen a vvti 1jz ra23 celica, so they deffinetly fit...

Beyond ECU, what else is dificult as far as aftermarket support goes? Turbo manifolds would me same/ or atleast very close to..?

    Cheers,

Much easier to get a 1JZ VVTi Power FC!

Exhaust ports are completely different so non-VVTi manifolds arent compatible. There are apparently issues with the turbos once over 100,000kms (thread here - but only an opinion), thread on block differences (none to affect mounting). Apart from the fact that they cost more, they are a newer engine (non VVTis are at least 12yrs old now) and the difference in torque is very noticable. JP has used both in conversions and has said he would always go a VVTi over a non.

Got a document that outlines some of the differences (mainly to do with VVTi - not physical sizes) - can get it for you tomorrow if you wish (pm me your email).

Are you willing to share a little about your project so we can structure advice based towards that? Most have assumed its going in an old Celica, but you havent mentioned that it is...

But once sorted, can still produce the numbers - see whatthe?

yep they run a higher compression.

and yes the rods are weaker/skinnier...so iv been told.

also heard they need a bit of headwork to handle bigger boost.

    13201-46030 is the part#

Btw higher compression does not equal, as you say, a "weaker" engine.

    cheers

Steve...WTF dude? you have a 1j powered ra28 now that if you up the boost any further your not gunna have any traction.....why go to all the hassle just to get vvti when essentially the motor/setup you have is capable of exceeding what the car can put to the ground anyway.....even with you hilux rear end hehe
Seems like a lot of effort and expense for very little gain....well that you will notice in a RA28 anyway.

yep i know about the compression...just agreeing why the pistons are different...but its been spread on alot of forums...soarer central, supra forums ect ect..that they are weaker...but yeah..just what i heard.

To answer a couple of questions -

Only because i may have aquired a one owner mint ra28 i wish to play with.
    haha
goin betwen a 1uz and vvti 1j for something different.

so yes, ra28, just for something different, didnt really know much about them, so i thought id try.

go the 1uz!, auto, big turbo or 2 = your drag car

    1jz = ur drift/race/fun car.

done and done, saying you own a 1uz and 1jz ra28 = street rep ftw! haha

    Deffinetly build a drag 28 with a blown 1uz or turbo 1uz!

I say tub it, cage it, strip it empty, perspex windows, stich weld everything! That would be awesome
