    Default Spark plugs for 1MZ-FE

My Camry has its 100K service due. Toyota wants $320 so they can stick it.

It needs the plugs done. What type of plug does it need? I supposes its those expensive ones due to the 100K service interval.

Also got any tips on replacing the rear ones? I suppose you have to unbolt the plenum eh.

Also what grade engine oil is recommended?

No you don't need the YRIDIUM or whatever ripoff plugs they're trying to upsell these days

if you get some normal copper NGKs and change these at a regular interval you should have no problems at all. I used to have an Avalon so I know this is a piece of piss on the 1MZ-FE.

Just did a quick search and found NGK part BKR6EK(P)B-11 - the P denotes platinum - these arent too expensive these days i dont think but is necessary (ie. BKR6EKB-11 is the standard copper plug equivalent).
The repco/supercheap bloke should be able to help you confirm this is right

also, you shouldn't have to remove the plenum at all
you'll probably have to remove the extention piece and spark plug socket from the rachet first, stick it in there and then attach the ratchet (and then remove the ratchet and pull it all out - easy nuff!)

i used to do the 2 from the right hand side, and the left one can be done from that side.

you shouldn't have too much problems mate

probably anything lighter than 20w/50 should be good.
maybe GTX 15w/30 or the run-of-the-mill normal Shell Helix Super 15w/40 or something
depends on how much you like to spend i guess

Thanks mate. By normal interval, do you mean 100,000km? Do coppers really last that long?

Nah, it's those expensive ones do last the longer 100,000km interval.

But copper ones should be good for 20,000 - 30,000km or possibly more

Yeah didn't think so. So the platinum ones are the proper replacement part? If they don't cost that much more I will just get them.

platinum ones are 4-5 times the price of a normal plug, tho it is your everyday car that you hardly want to open the bonnet so i rekon get the good ones so you dont have to do them for a while.

Copper plugs are 3 bucks. I thought "idiom" tipped ones were more like $19?

They last around 100k vs 10k for coppers.

If you follow the manufacturers change intervals (100k, or 10k) then the good ones are probably cheaper in the long run.

If you don't follow manufacturers intervals, you'll probably get 30k out of copper plugs in a good, stock, low performance motor. This makes the "chlamydia" tips look dear.

Id agree...~$4 std vs ~$19 platinum. Plug last approx 4-5 times longer... So the money is the same. Its the effort under the bonnet that differs.

Also, ill say that i believe the platinum plugs are somewhat better performing. You may not notice much on a NA factory tuned V6 but there was a world of difference in my 1ggze.

Irridium plugs are the same money as platimun plugs... On an atmo car i reckon they're great bang for buck. Have had inconsistent results on boosted stuff.
    meh...

its worth checking toyota for the pricing of most of your parts.

    denso platinum plugs are cheap.

genuine oil filter (90915YZZD2) is cheap as chips, the price toyota pay for that filter is like $12.

genuine oil isnt all that dear. id suggest just getting them to price you all the parts required to carry out the service. they will have everything on file of what you will need.

if it all correllates (ie. 4-5 times more expensive and lasts 4-5 times longer) then that there's no reason why you shouldn't

maybe i'm remembering from a time when platinums are more expensive than they are currently

but at $320 for 6 plugs vs $30 for 6 plugs, i know what i'd be doing there
even at 3 plug changes (eg. every ~33,000k) you're still only paying $90 for the 3 changes that you would've changed 1 set of genuine toyotas (and saved like $220)

if you can't change your plugs every 30,000km (for some people, this is like 3 years) - you don't deserve to own a car

What does the "Toyota 100k service include? The timing belt should be on their service/replacement schedule. If that is included in the $320 along with new platinum plugs, bite the bullet and spend the dough. Unless of course you really know what is entailed in the belt change and can do it in under 3 hours yourself. Mate of mine spent all weekend doing the timing belt on his 3S. Lotsa beer sucking time down the gurgler.

    cheers Chuck.
