    Default 1JZ-GTE Dipstick Length

I found this on the old forums:

    "Effective Length JZA70: Stick = 557 mm Tube = 490 mm
    Effective length JZX81: Stick = 585 nn Tube = 530 mm
If you use a chaser tube and stick in a JZA 70 you will have 12mm less oil height. If you swap back the other way you will have 12mm too much.
Dipstick Eff length is from the tip to where it seats on the dipstick tube."

Now the problem I have is:
Someone else did the front sump conversion on my 1J & I'd like to check that the dipstick reads correctly. So I measured the stick & tube & got:
Stick length (from the tip of the dipstick to where it seats on the tube) = 612 mm
Tube length (from where the tube enters the block to the end of the tube) = 530 mm point to point (or 540mm total - as the tube is actually curved).

Obviously 612mm doesn't line up with any of the measurements on the old forums.
Can some please throw up some 1J dipstick & tube measurements so I can see wtf is going on?

    Thanks

    Peter

C'mon guys - I know there is plenty of 1Js with out there.
Will someone please take a tape measure to their dipstick & tube?

    Thanks

measured the dipstick in jza70, 560mm. measured from base of tube resty bit, to tip.
perhaps yours is from a soarer or jzx90/100?
or out of something completely different?

Thanks Beatle - it seems that I certainly don't have a JZA70 stick & tube.
Chris - it will be interesting to see what the Soarer & Chaser ones are.
    Thanks

JZS147 Aristo Front Sump (quite sure of that).

    Tube: 490mm
    Stick: 555mm

(strange how that is pretty well the same as a JZA70 :S).

I saw the engine that it came off. I also compared it to my JZZ30 dipstick that I swapped and it was different (I don't recall if it was longer / shorter). The tube also required some bending to get it to mount to the 1JZ inlet manifold (due to the 2JZ-GTE having a slightly different manifold / bolt location for the dipstick).

    Cheers
    Wilbo

that is weird. So a front sump 2jz stick is the same as a rear sump 1jz stick.

How can you check if yours is reading correctly wilbo?

Indeed, and a little concerning! At least I would be on the overful side as opposed to underful.

It appears to take around the correct amount of oil to fill however, ~5L...

Just measured a JZZ30 type, it's approximately 557mm OA Dipstick and 495mm OA tube. Hope this is off assistance.

Thanks guys, so what we seem to have so far is:

    JZA70 & JZZ30 (1J rear sump) & JZS147 (2J front sump): stick 555 - 557mm, tube 490 - 495mm,
Hence - stick protudes 67mm into sump from bottom of tube

    JZX81 (1J front sump): Stick 585mm, tube 530mm
Hence - stick protudes 55mm into sump from bottom of tube

My setup: Stick 612mm, tube 530mm,
Hence - stick protudes 82mm into sump from bottom of tube

This is assuming everyone is ignoring the bend in the tube & just measuring the tube end-end.

It looks like all I'll need is a stick that is 585mm long

Just to be sure, this is how I am measuring the dipstick. It would also be interesting to know if the distance between L and the end of the dipstick is 15mm in all cases.

One further question (seems like a dumb one but I have to ask it)- in the image below, I assume when you do a sump swap you don't just swap the pan, you have to swap the whole piece indicated in the image below. Can someone confirm this?

    Thanks

    Peter

yes you swap the whole section when you swap sumps.

You take the bottom section of the pan off, then pickup, baffle pan etc. Then there is a heap of large bolts 14mm I think that go around the bottom of the block. Undo them and pry the large section off and bob's your aunty.

Ok - I've given up on 'finding' a front sump 1JZ dipstick, so I'll shorten mine.

Before I cut too much off, can someone with a front sump 1J please confirm (with reference to the above picture):
    a) I need to make it 585mm long (from where it seats on the tube to the tip)
    b) the distance from where it seats on the tube to the L mark is supposed to be 570mm

    Thanks

    Peter

    Chris/Joel,
thanks guys. I'm also going to have a look at a 1J out of a JZX90 tomorrow - that should triply confirm it.

    Regards

    Peter
