Default electronic speedo in older mechanical-drive speedo equipped car

    hello

wanting to run an aftermarket speedo and tacho in my car
transmission is a t50 with mechanical speedo drive

all the ones i see speco vdo etc. are driven by either:
    • hall effect sensor
    • magnetic pickup
    • ecu square wave output

what do people do to run electronic speedos on older cars like mine?
do i need to rig a magnetic pickup on the tailshaft?
or can i rig something to run off the original speedo cable/drive gears?
or is there some other option which I'm missing?

i = remove grease real good but electronics is not my friend

    Hey there
i have a electronic vdo speedo in my mazda 1000 ute, it uses a w57 gearbox wtih a vdo sensor that attaches to where the speedo cable used to be.Not cheap , but works same a factory. you may be able to get a sensor from a late model toyota that will fit , and be a cheaper option. The VDO part no i use is- 340 801 toyota hall effect sender.
    cheers

If the T50 speedo drive is the same size as the A340E then you should be able to use an electronic speed sensor off a later series MX83 cressida - it just screws in in place of the cable; 12V supply, 12V squarewave output.

With a bit of machining, the electric speedo drive from an AE101 can be made to work. If you pm me your email address, I'll pass back a file from the Westfield Car Club which shows how to do it step by step.

Mos and Rick have the right idea, just make sure that the sender will send an appropriate amount of pulses per rev for the speedo to work(irritating personal experience with a speco speedo and mx83 sender)
    GA23(never finished-now with cracked block ) JZX83 (Tyre eater) 3sgte AE86. by now i should know better.

usually the aftermarket units can be calibrated to almost any number of pulses per revolution. I'd just do what Mos suggests, get one of the screw on adaptors

They just screw onto the mechanical speedo drive, just like the old speedo cable does, but give an electrical output instead.

Yeah, just use either a cressy one, or a AE111.

FWIW this is what mine looks like:

P.s. the extra adaptor isnt needed, it just gets it up out of the way of everything so it doesnt get damaged. I destroyed another one with a rock, easy to do when you are flying along at 180km/h 100mm above the track. In that position its protected by the Gbox crossmember.

    Mos.

    Yep what he said.
I can't remember if I used the whole drive unit or just the screw on end piece but it is definatly 100% a Cressida elec sender unit on a T50 box.
My sig has been pruned as it was over 5 lines long.

To save starting a new thread I have one of these speedo pickups to convert to an electronic type. What I need to know is the pinout for this unit. I did find pinout in relation to the W58 but unsure whether this is the same?
