Default 60's Crown engine conversion - any suggestions?

    Hi guys,
I'm not all that familiar with this sorta stuff so go easy on me! hahah
My old man and I are looking for a late 60's Crown. There's abit of a story behind why we want one, but I'm looking into having the engine swapped - if we find one that hasn't already.

I'm not looking to break a new speed record, I'm just looking to have a newer engine installed that's got abit more oomph! and lifespan.

Are there any common engine conversions for this type of car? I've heard that a common one is a Chevy engine?
    Costs?
    Suggestions?

Umm.. I'm not sure whatelse is involved apart from buying the engine and then putting it in.. so, any feedback would be awesome!

    Cheers!

You need to give us more parameters.

Turbo? V8? Keep it all Toyota? EFI? Carby? Budget?

With those answered we'll be able to give more guidance.
Too many options to just say "we want a newer motor".

HI mate, welcome to the forums.
Most people here will hate the idea of a chevy (or any non-toyota engine for that matter) in a classic crown.

There are a couple of guys here i would recommend you look at for inspiration for your engine conversion and crown of choice.
I've given you a link to their members rides so you can check out what they have done.

    thetoyman75 - http://www.toymods.net/forums/showth...ght=rods+crown

gianttomato - ***i cant find his member's ride thread***

Some engines of choice from the Toyota ranks would be:
1UZFE - 4L, V8, all alloy, quad cam, lexus engine.... tough tough engine, and very high tech.
    2JZGE - 3L, straight 6, tough yet relatively economical
    2JZGTE - 3L, straight 6, twin turbo - absolute KILLER engine
7MGTE - 3L, straight 6, single turbo - slightly older engine, but still pretty tough.

THere is heaps of options to chose from when you pick a toyota engine, and almost all will be better than a p00bucket Chev.

If you are looking for a group of awesome and helpful guys down in Canberra, I suggest you join up with the Canberra Celica Group. Without a doubt one of the friendliest group of guys you will find in the Toyota community.

They are meeting for a beer on the 21st of Feb too - http://www.toymods.net/forums/showthread.php?t=33044

Here is their website - http://www.canberracelica.org/

Here is another awesome thread on classic crowns too. Worth a read and look through all the pics for inspiration!!

Probably the most common conversion would have to be a Holden Red of some description. You can still buy the bits to do it from Castlemaine Rod Shop.

Some people do put Chevs in them, but then again some people lie under a glass table and have women shit on it.

    Stay Toyota.

A simple cheap conversion would be a 5M with a carby. A more complicated and relatively more spendy conversion would be to 'drop' a 1UZFE in there.

We probably need some idea of your budget.

If I were you, I'd be looking at that sweet MS55 with the 302 Windsor on Ebay at the moment. The owner might be flexible and the only money you'd have to spend would be to tart the thing up.

Thank you soo much for the information.

Again, all this seems abit over my head at the moment.. all the 1's J's Z's T's and E's throw me off completely. I wasn't really all too sure what they all meant and I wasn't too sure exactly what engine could fit or not or BLAHH! *implosion*

I'd love to keep it all Toyota, I only mentioned the Chevy because someone suggested to me that alot of people have done it.

From the info that was given by Witz, the economical side of things on the 2JZGE sounds appealing. I'll probably dig up some more information on that.

    Cheers!

Anything M series just needs the sump and pick up swapped and it will bolt in using the existing engine mounts.

That said if you really want to do a more complicated conversion, I can recommend the 2JZGE - probably the pick of the bunch. Keep it auto and you'll have a car that will run high 15's - low 16's.

You can probably pick up a motor loom and ECU for about 1K.

I'd defintiely like to keep it Toyota. Although if there's a more economical engine that is available, I'm definitely interested. I'm not too familiar with how much engines would cost, but would really like to keep it around the... 'free' area . hahah I guess depending where I am after i buy the car, will determine the budget and also when and if I can buy it.

I'd really like to keep costs down, but at the same time want an economical engine. I've already got a Skyline that drinks alot!

Is there any workshop(s) that you could recommend that could supply the motor.. and everything else that is involved?

So far I've found that JustJap in Sydney have a 2JZGE motor ($895), but recommended getting a half-cut - which they don't have at the moment, but I can order.
I've googled and had no luck with rolin, asina import spares..

Anyone know of any other half cut.. people?

Search this forums for "Half Cut Dealers" or something of that nature.

We have a full list of almost everywhere decent in Aust to purchase from.

Ahh there we go thank you very much, I didnt know what to search.

Calling around I've managed to find a half cut 2JZGE from an Aristo for $1995.. is that the round-about price for the 2JZGE half cut?
.. I swear I'll keep this car for longer than 12 months.

You'd get a 2JZ-GTE engine box and management package for that.

Most people use 2JZ's because they're cheap, $300-500 for a bare engine generally.

Which model of crown are you interested in. The earlier ones seem to have more width to the engine bay allowing a wider engine to be used and the RS* ones seem to have a short engine bay possibly making a big 6 a tough swap to fit in.

1 uz's are also very cheap for what you get,

with a nice exhaust the v8 will give a great rumble fitting of the style that the 60's crown embodies.

fuel economy for these motors is also unheard in the v8 circuit.

For a better indication of what this motor is, any Lexus LS400 (toyota celsior), Lexus SC400 (toyota soarer - also had a twin turbo variant and a 2j non turbo I think) or even newer crowns (90's) had this power plant.

2j's may come in a bit cheaper, judging from previous comments but for only a smidge more you could do the v8 and have similar economy.

If you're doing an engine conversion the difference in the amount of money between these 2 is a drop in the bucket but I'm not sure on the being engineered side of things how much difference it would make.

To sum it up, If the decision was mine (I know its not) I'd go the 1uz hands down.

P.S Good luck and again, Welcome!

Yeah, I wouldn't pay more than 1K for a 2JZGE with loom and ECU. I bought 2 bare motors with cut looms for $300 the pair.

Head over to supraforums.com.au - all the kids are selling their NA motors to put the TT jobbies in there. You'll get a good deal if you're prepared to wait.
