Are you letting your car warm up before you do this?
Hi Guys,
Just took my car in for it's 100K Km's service, it drives great most of the time, but occasionally it's a little wierd.
For the service changed....
Timing belt
Timing belt tensioner
Platinum Plugs
HT Leads(cause they were stuffed)
Coolant change
Oil change
Oil filter change
Fuel filter change
Injectors cleaned
Checked all fluid levels and changed as required(trans, brakes, diff etc...
Mods car has....
HKS Pod
HKS Kansai Extractors
2.25" Cat back exhaust of some variety with cannon
The sensor that goes in/near the cat isn't attached to anything, but I'm led to believe you don't need it?
Now, most days it's perfect start it up, drive around beautifully, but then there are other days where the power just doesn't seem come on, and then it hits you all at once(like a diesel).
So from Idle in 1st, I could floor it first 3000RPM would be average and then after that car suddenly picks up power and drives like it should. Does varying things for different gears, and not all the time . Similar thing seemed to happen to my MR2. I guess the power delivery just isn't as smooth as I think it should be, like it's labouring for the 3K, and then it's like a blockage clears and it just goes
I checked the diagnostic plug for ECU errors, but there are none.
So something is either amiss, or maybe I'm just too used to the power of the car now, I've had it a year and it just doesn't feel as fast as it used to(about the same time for the MR2, which was 12 months). When I drive people around on the days when I think it's not working properly people still think it's pretty quick, and my girlfriend can't seem to tell the difference, am I nuts?
Any ideas guys things to check, and no doing a swap to a 2JZ-GTE or teh p00 motor isn't on the cards....

Unfortunately I usually let it sit for a minute before driving it anyway....Annoying thing is it's working perfect today
Yes, that cat sensor does SFA, it only tells you went you cat is overheating (ie, its died).
As for the motor, when was the last time the dizzy cap/rotor were changed?

Doesn't the 2JZ have coil packs? So it wouldn't have a dizzy.

Have you had it on a dyno? If so, what did the mixtures look like? What you are describing sounds like hesitation, which can be due to poor mixture. I don't know anything about the flexibility of the 2JZ-GE ECU, but if it's MAP sensored, it could be a bit cranky about the breathing mods.
Not the nonVVTi.Originally Posted by Nim

Nathan just follow the spark plug leads and you will find the dizzy at the end , I have never looked inside mine. I havn't got my car back on the road yet with the pod etc hooked up so I can't say how that has affected things from having the factory air box.
Yes, uses a 3 coil waste spark setup, the same as the VVTi 1JZGTE.Originally Posted by Enchanter

Sorry, if I can stay off topic for a moment, the Turbo 1JZ-GTE and 2JZ-GTE both use coil packs don't they? Do they use wasted spark?

1JZGTE and 2JZGTE (nonVVTI) both use coil packs in a non WastedSpark setup (6 CoP)
1JZGE and 2JZGE both use single coil and dizzy/rotor/leads setup.
2JZGE and 1JZGTE VVTi both use 3 coil and 3 leads in a WastedSpark setup.
Not 100% sure about 1JZGE and 2JZGTE VVTi I'm afraid.

2JZGTE VVTi is the same as the 2JZGE VVTi - 3 coil packs and wasted spark.
which I was mildly perplexed to find out. The most powerful engine toyota ever make, and they go wasted spark?
For those of you unsure what waste spark is (I wasn't) I googled this
