Default Auto 4AGE Loom, Manual 4AGE, PROBLEM!

    Okay,

    i have a AE92 FX-GT.

It was Automatic before. i took out the motor, and gearbox, left the loom in there, and replaced it with the same type of motor (Bigport 4AGE), swapped all the sensors over, and fitted a manual C series gearbox.

It looks to me like the whole loom matches up. i have all dash lights working, everything, even the headlight sensors... the only problem is, the car doesnt start. The starter motor is working if you force it to start (connecting loom to battery), but something is holding it back from then getting spark.

I figure this has something to do with the auto loom and ecu, as it must think it needs to be in Neutral or Park.

There was a 3 Pin clip. it had a yellow, orange and black cable,. on the auto box. so i connected the yellow and black together, and tried to start the car (thinking it would all work out, and would think its in Park or neutral. but no, it still doesnt start. do i really need ANY suggestions from you guys, as you are the experts

    Thanks..

    Jack

you say you bridged yellow and black, have you checked the wiring diagram too see what wire is what? you might need to bridge yellow and orange

With key turned to ON, if you short the starter to the battery directly the car should start and run... regardless of whether the NSW is bridged or not

the starter does work then. yes, but that doesnt solve the problem of it not starting off key.

Also, its not getting spark, and im not 100% that injectors are squirting. But fuel pump is working, and there is pressure in the rail.

Thanks for the help though, im just trying to work out the spark problem now

If it's sparking and getting fuel (are the injectors opening?) then the only other thing to check is timing.
Was the engine running before you got it? Any chance the dizzy was pulled out and put in the wrong way around?

Throw a timing light on it while you crank and check the timing.

    Yeah timing about.
its a bit better now, waiting for a mate to drop timing light off (Thnks 4agte)
and then i shll get that sorted.

otherwise the revs are hunting a bit, and it stalls when you get on the accel.

    So it starts now? Cool.

Yeah, the dodgy idle and dieing on accel could be a number of things inc. timing.
check the timing is spot-on first, then if it's still happening, start to look for air leaks, cracked vacuum lines ect.

    its timing..

i think a cam may be off by one tooth.

How badly is the spark timing off?

If it's waaay off, it's much more likely that the dizzy is a few teeth out rather than the timing belt being a tooth out. Here's the page from the manual that shows you how it should go in.

    To check the timing belt:
Take off the upper cam belt cover and look for the dots on the cam pulleys. Also notice the lines stamped into the plate behind the pulleys.

Rotate the crankshaft pulley until the mark on the timing cover lines up with the notch on the crank pulley.
You should see the cam pulley dots at the top and they should line up with the lines on the plate.

This pic should make it clearer.

If *both* cam pulley marks are down the bottom, try rotating the crank pulley once more.

If one lines up and the other doesn't, you'll have to bust out the big breaker bar, pull the timing belt off and put it back on properly (might as well stick a new one on since you have the thing apart).

Fingers crossed it's something alot simpler tho...
