whats wrong with your current e53 box ? it should bolt up to the new 3sge ? or is the old one shagged ?
I have an S54 gearbox from a SW20 MR2 that I want to bolt up to my 2nd gen 3S-GE from an SW20 that I'm installing into my ST162 (previously home to a first gen 3S-GE and an S53 gearbox).
Most resources I've found on the topic involve turbo E153 gearboxes, GT4 gearboxes and other such things. What I haven't been able to pin down is exactly what needs to happen to an MR2 gearbox to make it suit a FWD Celica. People say the 'shift linkages' need to be swapped, but my Haynes manual doesn't have anything by that name.
I'm in over my head here =)
Can I use the housing from my S53 gearbox to house the new S54 internals (maintaining compatibility with my current shift cables)?

It is still an option, however using my S53 Celica gearbox on the MR2 engine will require modifying the plumbing on the engine block. S53 has the starter motor on the exhuast side, which interferes.
I've already got a gen 2 flyhweel and starter motor to go with the S54.
And yes, the gearbox is shagged. It's now 20 years old and while it doesn't crunch, you do have to baby the synchros.
have you considered gettting your hands on a slightly fresher s53 ?
at least for moving the e153 boxes into fwd its a matter of drilling a new point to attach the shifters into... cant really give details as i havent done it..
that said S series boxes that are a little fresher should be pretty plentiful coming from both celicas and camrys
Other than the ST162, most 'S' gearboxes are the 'S54'. And yes, the FWD configuration S54 from a Celica or Camry would solve the situation. Unfortunately, I already have the S54 MR2 gearbox.
Could you do something like this (but in reverse of course)
to convert from mr2 to fwd is all bolt on - basically you need to use the complete shifter linkage from the celica box - however you need to plug up the hole in the case where the sw20 linkage came through

*slaps forehead* Dave, I never thought of searching for a reverse procedure!
T, thanks for that info, I'm going to research that more.
As T said though, the reverse is muuuuuch easier as the hole is already there (that you don't need) and there is just a blank off cap on the other side where your stuff goes. If you swap the blank off cap with your selector linkage and plug the now superfluous hole on the other side, Bob would indeed be your uncle.
Can the S53 or the S54 be installed on a 3SFE, 2.0cc, RAV4. The 1997 RAV4 has the E250, It's a 2WD.Originally Posted by buck naked
