    Angry RA23/28 with KE70 steering column and rack and pinion

    I know this question has probably been asked a dozen times, but the search doesn't bring up the specifics I need.

    I have the following:

    RA23 steering column which is a single piece outer, with a 2 piece inner, and the joined 4 bolt plate that bolts between the body and the base of the shaft.

    KE70 steering rack, and two piece inner and outer steering column.

    I've been told the two just 'fit'.

    Experimentation this afternoon showed that they do not 'just fit'.

    So.

    What on earth have people ACTUALLY used. Which bits.

    I have been told to use the entirity of the RA23 gear apart from the lower half of the inner steering column. This does not work as there is no place as the base of the RA23 OUTER for the bearing on the KE70 INNER to lodge.

    Which leads me back to using some, if not ALL of the KE70 INNER and OUTER, seeing as how the ke70 outer has the place to lodge the inner's bearing.

    BUT, then, the outers are not quite long enough, so there'd be a bit of beared inner shaft. I don't really care, but this might be a problem. Additionally, there is no easy way of mounting the base of the ke70 OUTER to the 4 bolt plate that connects to the body at the base.

    So, what have people actually used? Which bits connect to where?

    What I am currently thinking is:

    KE70 TOP Outer <-> KE 70 LOWER Outer <-> Modified 4 bolt Plate
    RA23 TOP Inner <-> KE70 LOWER Inner

    What I had been told was

    RA23 1 piece OUTER <-> Std 4 Bolt Plate
    RA23 TOP INner <-> KE70 LOWER Inner

    That would be delightful, IF there was a place for the KE70 Lower Inner's Bearing to seat in the RA23 OUTER.

    I am on the brink of committing automotive hommocide, so anyone have any ideas?

    ae71 non ps r+p and crossmember needs to be used with an a60 non ps column.

    the column needs to have the passenger side mounting wing cut down by 12mm then rewelded and braced (you may have to move the alloy plates in it back or forth by 10mm but i cant remember exact figures) and the base plate that bolts to the firewall needs a few bends added and 4 new holes drilled and rivnutted.
    a60 column shroud needs to be used and there will be a fair bit of trimming required on the top part to clear the dash.
    the barrels dont interchange so get it rekeyed ($40) by a locksmith.
    change over the combo switches which requires 4 bolts and 5mins of your time. or rewire to suit if you so choose.

    the lower section between the 2 unis may require a slight lengthen via the rubber isolater depending on where you mounted the x member.

    you may also be able to use ta22 steering arms to get abit more lock out of it but i know what it does to bumpsteeer etc as i havn't done it (heard it from bigworm)

    any more Qs just ask.

    fairly simple job but it does require some thought.

    cheers

    Wow... That sounds much like I've got NONE of the bits you just mentioned.

    Does, ae71 = KE70?

    The gist of what I got from what you said was that I need a ra60 steering column rather than ke70?

    yeah ke70 column was too fn hard to be bothered with. wasn't long enough etc.

    ke/ae = same boat bar the mounts on the xmember that hold the engine but i dare say you have already cut them off so no need to worry.

    I just welded it in place...

    The bearing has a "Case" around it that can be welded to the end RA2# Column Surround, and it works perfectly... Not sure what an engineer would think, but I know that you don't give a rats about engineering...

    I'll try and grab a pic tomorrow for you, or you can just come and see/feel it for yourself...

    Otherwise, I'll pop over Saturday morning and show you what I did...

    Edit: Similar to this, but the bearing case sit flush on the end of the RA2# Column Surround...

    BigMat has the RA60 column in his RA28.

    To get the RA60 plastic column shells to fit with the dash took it quite a bit of butchering to the RA28 plastic dash panels around the area.
    He hasnt finished it, so im not sure how itll look as yet.

    i did the opposite and cut the column shroud to suit, that way if it was changed to something else later the orig dash wouldn't be butchered.

    cheers

    Yeah, that sounds like the way to do it.

    ill see weather i can find some more pics. but the general idea was to cut the centre sections out from both the steering column flanges (the black things that attach to the firewall and the end of the steering column), leaving enough rim on the ra23 one to still be able to fit the bolts that hold it on the firewall. then the KE70 centre bit needs to be trimmed, ended up cutting vertical slits into it and bending them inwards to make it fit onto the outside of the ra23 plate. then just a matter of welding it all up and bolting on.

    so long story short, the bit on the firewall is the ra23 one with the center cut out, and the one on the column is the center of the ke70 cut up and welded on.

    cheers Mike
