    Default 3SGTE-E51 box

Have been considering different ways to do the 3S install into my AW11, and someone mentioned to me that you can use the 3S bellhousing and bolt the 3S motor to the standard GZE gearbox. Is this doable, and what are the hidden catches, pros and cons...etc?

    Thanks, RM.

The hidden catch is that the 3S bell housing isn't like a RWD bell housing, it's an integral part of the gearbox housing. You need to have a 3S box to pull apart completley then swap the E51 bit's into it.

Just use the SW20 box and be doen with it is my advice.

Ah. Well that kinda fixes that idea. I was hoping to keep my box because it's got a really good LSD in it, and I think it's lighter than the 3S box. Has anyone tried to make a spacer ring to use the stock bellhousing?

The E51 and E58 are practically the same box, they would weigh extremely close to the same amount. You could swap your LSD between boxes.

Of course that involves completely disassembling the gearbox as well though.

Using a spacer would not be cool as then the input shaft wouldn't fit correctly into the crank and clutch. Your clutch actuation also would no longer work.

Seriously Toyota have made a gearbox perfectly suited to what you want, it bolts up to the engine you want to use and also bolts up to the AW11 supercharged mount points if you want to use them.

Trying to adapt something else, while you may be able to find a way to do it cheaper initially (highly doubtful) will almost certainly end up with you needing to redo it with the correct gearbox.

So the SW20 box has the same mounting points as the GZE box, and you can swap the diffs over?

Yeah the boxes are very much the same. If you buy an aftermarket LSD you just buy one for an E series box which both the GZE and 3SGTE ones are. As far as I know all the mounts on the GZE box are the same place as the 3SGTE. I wouldn't necessarily recomend using these mount locations on the chassis for putting a 3S in an AW11 thought, it will most likely end up with the intake manifold back past the rear firewall.

Ok...what if I was to make my own intake manifold? Which I was considering, because the Gen2 one is shite...Just seems to me that you're best off by using the stock mounts, since they're strong and already there...

The stock mounts are strong for a 1.6 supercharged engine. Strong for a Turbo 2L is a whole other thing in my opinion.

It has been done with the stock chassis mounting points. Would I do it that way? Based on the 6mm plate mounting points welded into my SW11 I'd say no.

hahaha...fair enough. Do you have drawings of your mounting points and where they were located?

I mounted mine about 10mm too far forward. Which meant I had to make a custom manifold (which is the worlds biggest pain in the @rse), but the thought of having even better weight distribution made me leave it that way =)
