    Default Lets talk fuel cells

Ok ive decided to get a bit serious with the soarer due to a new engine choice (no longer 1JZ planned) so I figured I might put a semi serious fuel system in it, since the price on cells have come down something fierce im gonna remove the existing tank and fit one of them.

    Something like this:

    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/rci-75litre-f...QQcmdZViewItem

now whats the go with the rest of the fuel system, i.e. what are my options?

do I have to run a surge tank?
can I run two lengths of dash 6 fuel hose down to the existing feed and return line and fit a bosch 044 somewhere in between?
    whats the deal with venting?

or am I thinking about this way too much and is it just a simple bolt and plumb in job?

anyones ideas, advice, experiences would be good

1JZ-Rolla just completed his fuel cell install, check his ride thread in the secret section for details.

Yours will be much simpler than his setup as his is in a van i.e. the tank is in the car with you so it is housed in a seperate cell to keep it separate from the cabin.

    PM him for details.

His cell looked similar to the one in the pic, I think his was from VPW in Mebourne.

I think the idea with his was that it wouldn't need a surge tank as room is scarce in the little van. The cell achieves this nicely.

Run either a plastic or metal fuel cell.
If you get a sumped one you dont "need" a surge tank. But they are much better.

My ideal setup for your situation would be (and taking into account the fact that you will go silly with HP later)

    Fuel Cell,
    Two 270L Pierburg feeder pumps,
    feeding Two (2) 2L swirl/surge tanks
Two Bosch 044s from the surge tanks,
Feeding twin -8 rails along the chassis to a
    Twin entry fuel rail
Use the existing -6 line as a return direct to fuel cell.

Put the entire lot in the boot, and either remote mount a filler (i.e. in the stock location, or just have a filler in the top of the tank, so you have to lift the boot to fill it.

Make 1000% sure you have an external visual fuel gauge (i.e. piece of clear fuel proof hose up the side of the cell), because standard fuel gauges on a foam filled cell tend to have strange inaccuracies.

    HTH.

FWIW, Sparky currently runs almost half of the above setup, i.e. One Pierburg, One surge tank, One 044. Im eventually going to pop a fuel cell into it (when i get the time).

unless you are drag racing you will still need a surge tank with the above.

foam is a PITA and you cant exactly fit baffles to a finished tank (well you can but it requires ten times the work)

do what takai said but use 2x -6 or 1x -8 lines to the front (2 -8s is like 2000hp worth of pulp)

    cheers

ok good start with the info chris, id rather go one bigger line say a -10 and a single 044 for now, becuase when the need arises ill switch to a single aeromotive pump like jay runs in his cressy.

that cell ive posted above is sumped does that mean there is no need for a surge? id rather keep it to one corner of the boot, leaving some boot space still as im planning on bringing it to the fest this year...

-10 line be too big for an 044?

also seeing the price of braided hose has come down so much over the years id probably do away with all of the factory lines and redo both feed and return in -10 and -6 braided respectively...plus its bling and I love bling

top mounted filler would also be the go as I dont mind having to open the boot to fill it.

Those cells have two fittings on the sumped area and two on top...im assuming this is provision for dual pumps and surges?

so id block one of each off?

    oh and for venting,
the top right fitting is the vent and has a rollover check valve in it, just plumb this back into your charcoal canister if you dont want fumes, or under the car with a filter on it if you dont care.

    cheers

ahh thanks for that post linden, I hadnt read it when I had made my last one...

ok so one -8 should be fine for feed and -6 for return?

i really want to keep it to one pump and one surge so im not going to do the twin thing...2 pumps means twice as many things to fuck up when im limiter bashing around mallala...

and your right...I dont care...so the external vent hose should be apples
