    Hrm. It appears that Toyota doesn't like the idea of advancing both their intake and exhaust advance at the same time...

    Seems like this 3UZ is missing the scissor gear that makes the 1UZ exhaust cam work. More seems to be going on up front though, but can't see it.

    Yes, all new Toyota FE heads have the scissor gears right at the front.

    And the 1ZZFE has INDEPENDANT cams.
    So FE != scissor gears.

    Oh wait, so the VVTi on FE heads does advance both cams as they go? Also, seems like the 3UZ now has the master cam as the exhaust, not the intake cam... not that it really matters I guess.

    No, intake.

    EDIT: that pic I posted is the 1GZ-FE (V12), not the 3UZ.
    But the scissor gear placement is the same.

    Ahh yes I see. Didn't notice the extra 4 cylenders.
    So the 1GZ-FE has the cam chain on the exhaust cam.

    Nim, from that pic you posted, what side of the head is the cambelt on, and what side of the head is the intake/exhaust?

    Straight from Kelfords website.

    We will also realease for sale very shortly our complete adjustable timing set containing the two front wheels and the two centre gears to make separation adjustable

    However, I have no idea how long ago that was written

    Not quite. That's a 2ZZGE head. The 1ZZFE is a shimless bucket arrangement, and it has no VVT-L.

    I just had a look at that website, and it is indeed ambiguous. It says "1zzfe with VVT-L" instead of 2zzge to indicate that there is a further developement to the 1zz... Took me ages to figure out why they were so wrong... But they weren't. Just crappy english skillz.

    I beleive a keen machinist would be more than capable of modifying stock 1UZ gears to add extra adjustability.

    I wonder if TRD do any such parts. I reckon they'd be mad not to if they ever did any tuning to the UZ's
