Default Odd brake problem (2001 Corolla)

My partners corolla has a deep rubbing/grinding sound coming from the front of the vehicle under heavyish brakes.
Doesn't really sound like metal on metal, but it might be.

I pulled both front wheels off along with both calipers and found something strange (to me anyway). The caliper on the front left had one pad worn substantially more than the other.

The brake pad which is acted upon by the piston had around 4-5mm more meat on it than the other one.

I know for a fact that all the front pads were changed around 2 years ago.
The other 2 on the right were worn the same as the low one on the left and each pad is wearing evenly across the surface.

Rotors look immaculate, with only a tiny bit of wear.

Suspension is stock standard, as is the rest of the braking system.

Any ideas? Anyone else had this problem?

If the calipers only have pistons on one side of them then they should have two shafts that allow the caliper to slide on them so that when the pistons are forced out in braking, the caliper centers itself providing even wear on the pads. If these shafts are dirty then they can stop the brake caliper working properly and increase wear on the pad in contact while the other one will either not wear at all or just not as much.

Does it make any noises when just rolling? what about when you jack it up and spin the wheel? Is the pad with the most wear being pulled away from the rotor when the brakes arent applied? If this is the case then the spring that holds the pads back could be worn, dirty, or not installed correctly.

Its not one of the south african built corollas is it? These have had braking problems so i have heard.

The south african ones usually just munch rotors.

seized caliper slider, pull it apart, clean out the slides (with brakecleaner) re-grease with wheel bearing grease, (or you can go buy the correct caliper slide grease) but bearing grease works fine.

have you checked the rear of the rotor for metal=metal contact?

as IN 05 NT said your calipers have seized up.. pull the sliders out clean them and regrease them..
bit odd for a car this age having the caliper seized up

that is normal but when there is a dramatic difference between the 2 sides then the slides have seized up

Do not use wheel bearing grease. It will swell and damage the slider rubbers.
