US$310 will buy you a pretty decent aftermarket electronic speedo. I'm in the same boat with my MA61 and decided this was the best option; I'm planning to modify the instrument cluster to fit a 5" Autometer gauge.
Some of you remember my on going AZ6 swap (still trying to get the bellhousing adapter made). One of the problems was going to be how to run the AE86 mechanical speedo from an electronic pulse based speedo drive in the AZ6. Well, while doing some leg work today I found

Now they also have another interesting little bit of technology... they call it the ERA

Norbie!

That 2nd box you can get from Jaycar, DIY kit, about $45 from memory.
Does +/- 100% adjustment of the original signal.
The first box is pretty interesting, but not really cheap.
I'd personally either do what Norbie is doing, or transplant a different dash into your car.
I have a UZZ30 Soarer dash in mine.

No doubt someone with the issue you had will see the picture and find it helpful

For the record you can adapt mechanical drives to electronic speedos using a pulse generator. Dakota Digital in the US sell them for example:

"In the beginning, the universe was created. This has made a lot of people angry and has widely been regarded as a bad move." -HHGG
You can also get them from a variety of late 80's, early 90's Toyota's (UZS131 Crown, MX83 Cressida, just to name a couple).
Or you can buy them new for about $100odd for an aftermarket brand.
Most Toyota's and Nissan's have 4 pulse/rev output, with a few having 20 pulse/rev.

hello
Does the mx5 az6 output shaft look like this?
I'm facing this same issue with a S15 gearbox. I brought an a Is200 worm drive which fits over the top but has a keyway, so nothing to spin the drive. Was thinking of welding it on or some way around fitting it...
Other options I've found are to run a sensor/pickup (e.g. toothed wheel or magnetics - and a VR sensor or hall effect - whatever interfaces to better to your tacho) combo somewhere - maybe even an adapt an abs sensor for the front wheel.
Rob at Pineapple Racing told me that is the way the RX8 speedo works, it takes the pulses from an ABS sensor. He has an RX8 drivetrain swapped into an older rotary truck, and he has been trying to find a speedo for a few years.Originally Posted by thanhngo
The ERA isn't such a big deal... as it was pointed out already there are similar devices. The "CableX" is unique for it makes possible MANY new options for people who are restoring, or more accurately updating older cars. Some people like to upgrade the dash... others don't. Imagine a hot rod(39 Willys for example) you like the old curved speedo, but you want to run new drivetrain... the cableX will accomplish the task.

I had same prob as thanhngo, fixed it with dollop of mig weld then file to shape for neat
fit and red loctite in groove and around shaft. works good. grind off and re weld if box
ever needs disassembly. easy eh?
should add altezza shaft is the one to use also mig 3rd gear to lay shaft to prevent box
destruction when original circlip pops out.

Been bugging Wilbo and possible got a solution to the S15 speedo problem requires drilling 2 tiny holes and thats it and 2 parts. Let me confirm it will work first and I shoot over some part numbers.
Yeah i heard about the circlip on 3rd...is it hard to pull the box apart? I'm afraid i would do damage. special tools? manual makes it look kinda tuff.
