Default 18RGU to Hilux engine swap questions

    Hi

Finally started to put my 18RGU in my 1980 2WD hilux (RN41) . For those who believe its just a straight swap it's not, a little bit of "customisation" is required. The engine and gearbox fit no problems. The pacemaker extractors had to be shortened 30mm or so to clear the torsion bar on the exhaust side.

The drama im having at the moment is that once the manifold, spacers, carby's and air filters are bolted up they impede on the Brake booster by about 20-50mm or there abouts. I am using a short manifold and like one inch tall K&N airfilters to give as much space as possible. The airfilters almost hit the bar that go's from the steering wheel to the steering box (i forget the terminology ) but it looks like there should be enough clearance.

Anyways so i'm considering using a remote brake booster? or seeing if anyone on here maybe knows of another smaller brake booster from another toyota or other car that might be able to be substituted without too much hassle?

Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome.

    cheers
    Daniel

Are you using factory spacers or unifilter flexible mounts?
The flexible mounts will save you about 30mm.

I think they are made by unifilter and they are a metal gasket fitted with a rubber ring on the opening of the manifold and the throat of the carb. It means that the carbys are flexible and not solid mounted as per factory. You also need to buy the mounting nuts as well as they are rubber backed.

Go find a speed shop that sells that kind of stuff and ask for flexible gaskets for side draught webers or solexes. Not sure of price, haven't bought them for a long time.

I dont think it will save that much clearence (although i'm not sure of the size of the original spacer) but yes Redline make softmounts for solex/webers, they look like this:

Joeys 1975 TA22 - the weird lookin' front one....

thanks but yeah i cant see those softmounts making any difference, may have to try and remount my brake booster slightly to allow for clearance.

    still welcoming suggestions

Well there is only one way to find out, put the motor in without the carbys and then mount the carbys on with either gasket and work it out from there.

Whats it doing, hitting the booster or the threads off the booster?
If its the threads, cut it off to where the bolt ends so there is no thread showing.

l had the same problem with a TA23 and that what we did but l was running ram tubes.

roscos yeah had a look last nite these rubber mounted gaskets arnt going to work the airfilter will stll hit the booster. The airfilter is also hitting the steering rod thingy aswell. I'm thinkin of switching to ram tubes too, i think that will solve my problem.

I had to put 5omm spacers to raise the cab to fit in a 5lt V8. Made heaps more room.Maybe this would help with your clearance problems. Not hard to do and looks better too.

Check the size of the booster, l think HiLux booster were fairly big in diameter compered to early model celica boosters. Go find an RA40 booster and change it and you might have to think about Borg-warner paper filters, you can alway get foam elements for them.
As for steering check for later models, you might be able to change things.
