Default Soarer spat it's twins, is now single. Achtung Keiner 56k!

Went over to a mates to watch bathurst and catch up with a mate who lives in Bris now. I get there and they say to me "take Az's car for a run and tell him whether the turbos are OK". So I go up the street and one is whining like it's dead. Turn out into another street and give it a bit. Turbos spin up noisily and then Bang, boom, splutter, bep bep bep, stall. Doh. Fired it up again but missing a few cylinders and limped home. Drank lots, watched last lap.

We though it might be a dead engine from ceramic bits inhaled back in(rumoured to be common). He drove it to my place and it was running on all 6 by the time it arrived so it must have been carbon under a valve from the backfire/explosion. Comp test says it's all good.

So, I talked him into a single conversion and here it is. Pics.

    Dead turbos.

New turbo and manifold. Chinese KKR/JJR 430.

Adaptor block welded on to go from T4 split to T3.

Manifold on. External gate port capped.

    Dump pipe and centre pipe.

    continued...

I'm keen to know how that turbo performs, let us know when you've had a chance to try it!

I saw a few other turbo conversion threads so thought this would be the spot for it.

    Stock management with 2JZR31 FCD.

Finished apart from a shield over the pod I want to make out of plastic and a shield over the exhaust housing I want to roll from stainless.

For the thermal control freaks out there, here is the heat control stuff.

Also added a fin type PS cooler because I had to remove the pipe type unit to fit the intercooler piping on the passenger side.

New plugs and oil and wnet for a run this arv.
Response is as good as std, there is plenty of it. It goes very well too. I saw .9 bar on the tint little digital boost guage/turbo timer he has. Will prolly leave it there for the moment.

I am happy with the way it turned out. I recommend a change to single in the event of twin failure. There doesn't seem to be any disadvantage to it and there are loads of advantages in space, reliability and scope for improvement.

Heat wrap is off a Fuso truck, not sure if you can buy it seperately but it is good stuff.

Oil drain can be seen in this pic. Black pipe at the front. It goes down, then forward, then down again. The flex hose goes between the alternator and thermo housing.

I will say that the oil drain is a bitch. i would love to see how the japs did it in there original designs in the 90's. The GT35 supra and GT40 2J cressy were both bitches to do as well.

Not sure what the mystery is with running stick management. The ecu gives no fark what is supplying the airflow.
It's a Soarer so it runs rich enough to have won the lotto twice. We will put a wideband on it and up boost till it has happy A/F ratios.

Will have to get a pic tomorrow. Needless to say it is custom made from tube sections. I would do it differently next time. Anyone with pics of how turst/hks etc have done the oil drain on JZ single kits please post. i suspect they use a long drain tube from the turbo with a flex built in and a new bolt on return to the sump.
